Question Are these symptoms of Cauda Equina? Please help.

I am having a large L5-S1 disc herniation for some time now, I have only had conservative treatments till now. I was pain free for 3 months. I have the pain again now, (only when I walk) after when I rushed to catch a bus. I also have pain in buttocks, back and waist area while sitting and sometimes little difficulty in getting up from a chair. This is something new.

From 4-5 days I feel a little difficulty in passing stool. The anal muscles near the rectum(outlet) seem a little weak. I also have a little difficulty in passing gas(farting). Need to do it with an effort.

I am able to pass urine without any problems and stool too but just that I feel some weakness in muscles near rectum. May be it's just me!

Any advice for me? Should I go for a new MRI? DO MRI's reveal if herniation has affected nerves responsible for passing stool?

Re: Are these symptoms of Cauda Equina? Please help.

Is the pain localized to the back or is it primarily in the leg? It is hard to determine when nerve involvement crosses the threshhold from just being a bit weak into the symptoms of CES.

You can read about the symptoms of CES on the sister site:

http://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/cauda-equina-syndrome

If I had any doubt, I would call my physician immediately.

MRI imaging should be able to tell if the involved nerves are badly compressed.

Re: Are these symptoms of Cauda Equina? Please help.

Right now pain is both in the back and in the leg and and also in the buttocks or buttock bones. Like when I sit I feel pain in buttocks. (In my previous episode of disc herniation I remember that I had pain mainly only in the leg not much so in the back or the buttocks).

I also have burning sensation in the right leg like near waist area joint on right, right outer thigh and right knee joint. (I had this feeling during my previous occurrence too).

Also, I have a 4 month old MRI with me after which pain had gone away. This time is a recurrence. I think I should go for a re-scan.

As for the symptoms I feel that may be I urinate fewer times(5 to 6 times a day) and may be have a feeling of reduced strength in rectal muscles.
