Old T12 Burst Fracture

I suffered a rather severe T12 burst fracture in 1993 from an falling accident. Over the past two years, I have been suffering from a lot of back pain radiating into my left buttocks area. I hurt at night while I'm sleeping which is odd to me because I'm lying still. My most recent x-ray shows degenerative disk disease in the T11/T12 are as well as osteoarthritis. My doctor has talked about surgery to help stablize my back to make it "straight". I would like some advise from anyone who has suffered the same or similar type of injury and see what I may have to endure for the rest of my life.

Re: Old T12 Burst Fracture

Have you had any imaging done of your lumbar spine? I'm wondering if you don't also have some DDD in the lumbar spine.

Re: Old T12 Burst Fracture

Yes. My lumbar x-ray revealed facet arthropathy on the left at L3 through S1. I think my back is just completely deteriorating since my accident in the Navy. I was finally referred to a neurosurgeon by my primary VA doctor, and I am getting an MRI on Friday. I just feel like I'm falling apart and it is really debilitating on a daily basis. I can't sit or stand for long periods of time without pain.

Re: Old T12 Burst Fracture

Any injury that involves impact almost always results in arthritis. Facet arthropathy is, of course, degenerative arthritis. It results in back pain and if it is also causing stenosis, there is pain that radiates down the leg or legs, making it difficult to stand or walk.

With facet arthritis, it is often worse when first getting up in the morning. Be sure you are sleeping in positions that take pressure off the joints -- curled on your side with a pillow (small) between knees, or on the back with a small pillow under the knees.

I'm happy you will be seeing a neurosurgeon and having some new imaging. Please let us know how it goes.

Re: Old T12 Burst Fracture

Thank you very much for your support and advice. I will definitely try the pillow between my legs at night to see if that helps reduce the pressure.
