Unhappy disk bulgement and sleeping

I am suffering from disk bulgement. I heard the best way to sleep or when you are laying down is put your back on the floor. I heard patients never should sleep on their stomach. Recently I experienced additional pain in my lower back as a result of sleeping down on the floor all the time so I decided to sleep on my stomach placing a pillow under my belly. This position is more comfortable for me and release the pain so I can sleep. However, in the morning sometimes when I wake up, I feel pain in my abdomen area. I need to know if its ok for me to sleep on my stomach.

Thank you,

Re: disk bulgement and sleeping

You could sleep on your stomach with a pillow, but perhaps your pillow is too big. You just need enough to align your spine. Probably the best position if you could adjust is to sleep on your side with a pillow between your legs, or on your back with a pillow under your knees. I used to be a stomach sleeper, but can't anymore, due to bulging discs. I put a 2 inch memory foam topper on my bed and that has helped, along with side and back sleeping.

Ouch! Just the thought of sleeping on the floor makes my back hurt.

I have herniated discs, and it took me a long time to find just the right way to sleep - I think it is different for everyone. I sleep on my side, with a pillow up against my stomach, to keep me from rolling over.

Re: disk bulgement and sleeping

Hi, I have had back problems for over 20 yrs. how you sleep and lay down is something you need to figure out for yourself. What works for some does not always work for others. Sleeping on ones stomach was always the way I use to sleep. Although a pillow will make this easier to do. If you don't have it just the right way, your spine doesn't always align the way it should. For myself I have always slept in a fetal position with a pillow between my legs.( at the knees) I also sleep with a pillow under my arm that I am not laying on. This I do for my neck. It's taking me years to adjust to sleeping w/pillows but, now I can roll over and the pillow stays between my legs as well as between my arms. Best to you with adjusting, to get much needed sleep! God Bless.
