Microdiscectomy soon..should I have it?
My brief history...L5/S1 protrusion in 2008 resulting in 18 month recovery (no operation) ....massive massive pain, further repeat in 2011 and another 3 months off work.
An MRI scan in August 2011 showed a L5/S1 10mm protrusion.....(which I am told is quite large) since then I have slowly recovered using physio etc and my sciatic pain has diminished to nothing more than a deep 'ache' at times, the usual numb foot etc. However I still encounter chronic back pain when lying down at night and feel like I am walking on eggshells .
I have seen a surgeon and he has advised a microdiscectomy stating the problem will never go away and I am at further risk. I joined a 5 month waiting list here in the UK and my operation is due in the next 8 weeks.
As stated I am now mobile, suffer minimal sciatic pain but deep back pain at night. I have started my sporting activities again (cycling)
Should I let them operate on my spine? I am worried that the intrusive nature of the procedure itself will cause more problems than I am suffering at present.
Or is it best letting nature take its course?
