Unhappy Extreme pain after first use of bone stimulator

In September I had a 4 level Lumbar Fusion. The disc were removed & replaced with hardware & bone grafts. The Bone is not growing like it should so I have been placed on a external bone stimulator for 30 min every 24hrs. I used it for the first time yesterday. I was in so much pain last night & am still in terrible pain today. I was wondering if anyone else has had pain as a result of using a bone stimulator.

Please help, I dont know whether to call my surgeon or not.

Re: Extreme pain after first use of bone stimulator

I was under the impression external stimulators were worn 24 hours day with a current that was hardly felt. I have known a couple of people from years ago that wore the machine for months without any adverse affects. What is your power source for the machine?

Re: Extreme pain after first use of bone stimulator

I'm so sorry you are having so many problems connected to your fusion. I have not used a stimulator so cannot advise...but, would suggest you call your doctor. As James suggested, perhaps you are not doing it correctly.

Re: Extreme pain after first use of bone stimulator

I feel nothing while I am doing the treatment, and from what I have read, there isn't any reason for me to have any pain from using it. It is the only thing that I can think of that I have done different. Below is a brief description of the unit.

SpinaLogic
The SpinaLogic® utilizes state-of-the-art combined magnetic field (CMF) technology, which produces low-energy signals that stimulate the body's natural healing process and enhance the success of spinal fusions. This bone growth stimulator requires only 30 minutes of treatment a day at the patient's convenience

I will be calling the doctor

Re: Extreme pain after first use of bone stimulator

I had fusion surgery and believe that I used the same thing you are using. It does absolutely do something because when I finished using it, I felt like I had a steering wheel on my back...the shape of the stimulater I was given to use.

Other than the temporary feeling of having a steering wheel on my back, I could not physically notice the stimulator had any other effect on me.

Re: Extreme pain after first use of bone stimulator

I've never heard of anyone saying they were in pain while using a stimulator, or immediately afterward. Did you do anything at of the ordinary while wearing it? I can't think what might be causing you new pain.

Where was your surgery? (which levels not which hospital ) How has your recovery been going?

Re: Extreme pain after first use of bone stimulator

I had a triple discectomy with cadaver bone fusion on April 20, 2012 and did very well. I was out of the hospital late on the 2nd day and was off all meds by day 9. I then started the bone fusion stimulator for 4 hours a day and have been in bad pain ever since. I have spoken to my neurosurgeon, as well as the rep from Orthifix, and they both insist I keep trying to use it, but i should break it up into four 1 hour segments as well as put another layer between the machine and my skin. I am still in pain to which walking even hurts as the pain reverberates up into my neck from the ground. I can 't take many pain meds (stomache issues) but out of desperation have started on Mobric, (which doesn't work as well as Celebrex).

I will keep you posted. But if anyone out there has had pain with the stimulator, please let us know. I am just praying that this pain isn't a contraindication for me or others who experience it.

Re: Extreme pain after first use of bone stimulator

I had L2-S1 fusion on 4/26. I'm currently (as I type this reply) In the last 20 minutes of my 2nd daily 2 hour session using an Orthofix Spine-Stim. I started the sessions on Tuesday (5/1).

I have experienced no (additional) pain or discomfort. In fact, initially I thought it helped somewhat, - might be normal recovery.??

Best of luck.
