Cervical fusion experience

Hello. I am 35 and have been suffering from DDD and disc problems in my neck for 9 years now. Took me this long to find a regular doc that would listen to me. Had a consultation with a neurosurgeon last week (2nd time seeing him and needed a updated MRI) and disc between C5 &C6 is bulging into my spine a decent amount (which explains all of my new "symptoms") and told me about anterior cervical fusion. He explained to me all the risks involved, recovery time etc.

HAs anyone else had fusion in their neck and what was your experience? I am 85% going to do this surgery.

Re: Cervical fusion experience

There is another board that you will find by scroll further down on the HEALTH ISSUES page called the "Spinal Cord Injuries" board. Most of the people who have cervical problems hang out there. If you post again there you will get more responses from people who know all about cervical fusions.

Before having a fusion, you ought to investigate Artificial Disc Replacement. I had a 2 level Cervical ADR in 2009 and my only regret is that I didn't have it earlier as I had been bothered by headaches for 3 years prior. Because the neck has less stress than the back, the outcome is generally succcessful. I had my surgery in Germany, but ADR is finally catching on in the USA and more spine specialists are being trained in the procedure and hopefully insurance won't be an issue.
