Unhappy 2 Bulging Disc... ugggghhhh then why does it hurt

I just don't get it. For about three years I have been having on again off again back/leg pain. Three years ago I had a CT and the result was L5-S1 bulging disc. I was put on flexeril 10mg and Darvocet all as needed. With in that year, I went down with sciatica four times and put on heavy doses of steroids. This was 2010. No other testing or specialist were done because we lost insurance. Nov of 2010 I found out I was pregnant. Was on bed rest because of the pain and discomfort and weakness in my legs, my legs would give out and they were afraid I would hurt the baby. Since my son was born in July 2011, I had two nerve blocks and was put on Vicodin 5/500 and Baclofen 10mg three times a day. Yet again lost insurance. For months I would be in soo much pain at times that it has been interfering with taking care of my baby, my other daughter, husband, housework. I have tried stretches, chiropractors, hot packs, cold packs, exercises, bought a new sleep number bed, wedge pillows, heating pad, hot tubs, massages with only getting temp relief. Had MRI on Tuesday and the diagnoses is Multilevel Disc Protrusion on L4-L5 and L5-S1. The pain is so unbearable at times, that I have developed anxiety and depression from missing out on important things the last few months and because I don't go anywhere by myself because I can't carry my son very long. I feel like I'm going crazy. I just want some feedback from anyone. Maybe something encouraging?

Where is the pain in your back and legs? How bad is the disc bulging? Is there any pain in your pelvis?

There could be other sources for your pain other than the bulging discs.

Re: 2 Bulging Disc... ugggghhhh then why does it hurt

The pain in the lower portion of my back. It sometimes is off to the right and into my Rt buttock into my upper thigh. I have pain in my left leg and thigh but I'm assuming that it is from my car accident from 11 years ago when I had a acetablular fracture(I have pins and brackets still). The pain is in my calves and feet. I have weakness when I walk, I am almost afraid to walk sometimes because my legs will give out on me. I'm also afraid of lifting my 8 month old son at times when my back is acting up because of having to bend over to get him.

I have more problems first thing in the morning and more at night. 5 our of 7 nights my legs ache and hurt to the point I'm in tears. I have problems sleeping because I wake up every time I have to roll over. For me to roll over in bed or the couch(I spend more nights on the couch) I have to grab a hold of the head board or the back of the couch and use my arms to help me roll over. It is very painful to do this.

The Dr didn't tell me how bad the discs were bulging, I didn't know that was something to ask about.

Re: 2 Bulging Disc... ugggghhhh then why does it hurt

If you had an MRI, you can request the radiologist report from the MRI, and the information would be in there. They generally use terms like mild, moderate, etc for things like that. Depending on which direction the disc is bulging can also be a factor.

What type of nerve blocks did you have, and what kind of relief did you get?

With the thigh pain, is it at the back of the thigh, side or front? Does any of the pain in your buttock feel like it's deep inside? There could be more than one issue going on.

I have the radiologist reports from all my imaging except for my CT scan in January of 2011. I really should get that just to see what it says.

Question Re: 2 Bulging Disc... ugggghhhh then why does it hurt

They are mailing me a copy of the report and I have the films on a disc already.

The nerve block I had was with epidural spread. They worked for a little while but nothing that lasted too long. The last one I had the Pain Dr mentioned he had to watch because I did have bone spurs in my back. The buttock pain feels like there is a knife sticking in there and with every movement hurts. It sometimes feels deep down. The thigh pain is mostly on the sides of my thighs.

I also have problems with numbing and tingling in my legs. This happens when I over do it during the day.

I have been keeping a pain journal and document EVERYTHING. My pain level, my activity, my medication, how I'm feeling.

I'm just tired of hurting all the time. I'm tired of not being able to sleep in bed with my husband and when I do I have a horrible night and the next day is pretty much shot. TMI but I can't even engage love making activities. If I have too hard of a bowel movement my legs go numb on me.

A friend of mine(who works as an RN) said that the radiologist report things but most times don't go into a lot of detail. She said that is why the specialist WANT to see the films for themselves. The orthopedic specialist that I go to in four days just wants the films and no report. So maybe there is something else going on that the radiologist is missing?

Re: 2 Bulging Disc... ugggghhhh then why does it hurt

There could also be something with your SI joint/s with that deeper pain in the buttocks.

The bone spurs could also be causing you some problems. Hopefully, the orhto is a good one and can get things figured out for you soon!

That pain journal is a good thing. That will help the doc as well.

As far as the TMI, I have had both issues many times.

Good luck, and keep us posted!

Re: 2 Bulging Disc... ugggghhhh then why does it hurt

My children are grown, how awful to be going through this at this time of your life. My cranioscral, Reike, accupressure lady and friend, gives me some physical relief and she reassures me that I am doing the best I can and it is so important. You have done so much. I have experienced the numbness in the vagina and surrounding area. Hopefully some solutions are around the corner

Re: 2 Bulging Disc... ugggghhhh then why does it hurt

Thank you! It is hard but I am pushing through. I go to the Orthopedic Surgeon in two days so I'm hoping I find out some more answers. Even if the answer is just more testing to figure things out.

My hopes are I will be okay by time school is out so I can take the kids to the park and the beach and camping, but we will see.

I went and got a massage today. The type of massage is Tui-na. It helped with the pinching pain but I'm a little sore tonight. I at least got some pain relief that wasn't in a form of a pill.

What did you learn at your appointment with the orthopedic doctor? I trust he was an orthopedic spine guy....

Re: 2 Bulging Disc... ugggghhhh then why does it hurt

The Dr stated that I have 3 bulging discs with slight impingement but there is nothing he can do, it's not bad enough. He sent me to pain management again. So I have an appointment with them on April 17th.

I was told to take an easy and keep doing what I have been doing to help with the pain. Easy for him to say. I asked him if he could write me a prescription for a maid, a cook, and a nanny. He didn't think I was funny.

That answer makes me so angry at those Drs..i know you didn't ask me for it,but my humble advise is fire his butt and find someone to help you...Sorry to rant,I'm in kinda the same boat and am sick of that answer.

Re: 2 Bulging Disc... ugggghhhh then why does it hurt

Oh I am sick of that answer too. I cried. It was like he didn't believe that this is causing me soo much pain. The Dr was in there for a total of five minutes(after waiting an hour for him). I'm gonna go to pain management because there is a procedure I haven't done yet. Ryesotomy(sp) where they kill the nerve that is giving me the problem. It doesn't fix the disc, but I have a baby at home and another smaller child that depends on me. I can't live on pain medication my whole life.

My husband thinks I should get a second opinion but I am going to wait to see what the pain Dr says. Just more waiting and more pain I guess. I've been dealing with it for so long that what's another few weeks.

I'm sorry you are going through the same thing that I am. It sucks on soo many levels. I can deal with pain but when it interferes with living, that is where it becomes difficult. I'm lucky to have a wonderful husband that understands and is being very patient with me. I'm also very lucky to have a very independent 7 year old that helps take care of me(get me drinks and helps me with the housework) and helps take care of her baby brother.

Re: 2 Bulging Disc... ugggghhhh then why does it hurt

That old 'activities as tolerated' gets really old! The docs obviously don't understand what that does to a person. They don't seem to understand that we have to limit ourselves so much, and stop doing so many things that we really don't have lives anymore. Unless they have lived with back pain, they don't understand what it does to our lives.

Re: 2 Bulging Disc... ugggghhhh then why does it hurt

You're right on the money on that one. I've giving up bowling, shooting pool. We had tickets to see the Pens play and I couldn't go. On top of that, birthday parties and get togethers are hard because if you go somewhere unless they have a chair that is comfortable you are completely miserable. My kids are missing out as well as me. I would love to be able to go to the zoo with them or the park and play. I own a camp but it is about 1 1/2 hours away and there is no way I can drive that long or even ride in a car that long.

Then the Dr's wonder why you develop anxiety and depression. What kind of life is it when you can LIVE. I don't ask for much. It's not like I was to go water skiing or rock climbing, I just want to be able to go and do things with my kids and clean my OWN house. I don't think that is asking a lot.

Then the Dr kind of made a comment that irritated me. He said you need to go to pain management because the medication you're on. I was like what? I understand Vicodin is habit forming but I take the lowest dose and I can take it up to 4 times a day and I take it about two times a day. He made me feel like I was making it up for the drugs or something. Maybe he wasn't and I was just emotional after he told me he couldn't help me. I don't know, but I didn't like it.
