Bad Herniated Disk L4 L5

I had a Emergency microdisectomy for a Herniated disk back in January which was causing loss of bladder control, leg problems, and other symptoms. I have a drop foot after the surgery still 7 months post surgery and flare ups every so often. I just got a brace for my drop foot, but I am wanting to know if I should go into the hospital to get another MRI done because of the flare ups or if that is normal, and how long should they last ?
Thanks all !

Re: Bad Herniated Disk L4 L5

I am not sure I can tell you how often the flare ups should occur. I think if they occur and continue to occur then the best thing to do is see the doctor that did the surgery & see if they are related to the surgery or if there is another issue going on. If they last for more then a few days and occurs frequently I think you really need to be checked out And you need to discuss with the doctor that when flare ups do occur what course of treatment you should take. Good luck

Re: Bad Herniated Disk L4 L5

I don't know whether your surgeon has discharged you, or if he is still following your case. Since this was emergency surgery, was the surgeon someone you had consulted with before? If he was assigned your case since he was the one on call you might want to consider looking for a different spine specialist if you were not satisfied with your experience with the surgeon.

If by "flare-ups" you mean you have periods of pain similar to what you had prior to surgery, this may mean there is some permanent nerve damage, or something else is still compressing a nerve that was not addressed by the surgery. Often with surgery for a herniated disc, the patient has recovered in nine months' time and is no longer having flare-ups.

If you have not had a MRI since the emergency surgery, it would probably be a good idea to have one done.

I'm sorry you are dealing with drop foot. It can be one of those unintended consequences of spine surgery. It may go away with time, but doctors don't seem to be able to tell you that with any certainty.

Re: Bad Herniated Disk L4 L5

it doesn't hurt to go get another MRI post oP, if you're having different symptoms Or feelings, very easy to rehrniate so take it easy,,, I too had a discectomy and done another MRI after surgery , another herniation still was present.also had foot drop and nerve not Regenerate yet...just did disc replacement 3 days ago and feel better so far...slow and easy wins he race...good luck
