Question Just told I have Herniated Disc's in Neck and Ruptured in Spine w/Questions ?

Hello,
I am a 44 year old female and I have Scoliosis, Spondlyosis and Degenerative Disc Disease and Arthritis in my Spine. I just had several MRI's and was tol that I also have Cervical Herniated Disc C 6-7 and Lumbar Spondlyosis L4-5. I had no idea I had these problems until I got my MRI results. I knew my neck was making crackling noises but I never expected all this.

Anyway, I have a great Spinal Specialist Dr that specializes in Spinal disease's and he says hat I need surgery for all of these issues. I am scared to death of having these surgeries done and trying to hold out as long as I can. Can anyone tell me if they have had these surgeries and if so what is the recovery time and pain with these ?

I have strange sensations in my back on both side that I can't explain, numbness in both legs from the knee up and now a lump on top of my left arm and swelling in my left palm near fingers. I also have alot of pain in my left arm and strange sensations in fingers on left hand. Dr says all this can be attributed to Herniated disc's in neck.

I am also having issues with bp meds and pain in left arm that is scaring me cause I don't know if its Heart related or from all my Neck and Back probs.Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

Re: Just told I have Herniated Disc's in Neck and Ruptured in Spine w/Questions ?

Welcome to the board.

What I would say to you first is that it is always a good idea to get more than one opinion when contemplating spine surgery, even if you think your spine surgeon is wonderful.

I am guessing that your cervical problem is in need of more immediate attention than the lumbar issues. Doctors do not like to operate on more than one area at a time.

I'm afraid you post doesn't have enough specific information in order for us to make suggestions or offer information for personal experiences. What specific surgery has been indicated to you that you need?

The pain in your legs is probably attributable to the problem at L4-L5. The arm pain is no doubt from your cervical issues. Sounds like you have some nerve compression that is causing these symptoms.

Question Re: Just told I have Herniated Disc's in Neck and Ruptured in Spine w/Questions ?

Hello,
For the C 6-7 I will be having an Anterior Discectomy/ Fusion and for the L4-5 I will be having a Lumbar Decompression/Fusion. I am trying to decide which of these I need to have done 1st. I also have to have another surgery that I will have done before both of these.

My husband had back surgery about 7 years ago but it wasn't as bad as my issues. My brother has also been through alot of back surgeries. My Dr said for the Neck surgery that he would be going through the front side of my Neck which seems crazy, I would of thought that they would go through the back of the Neck. Very scary when having surgery on the neck and spine.

I have had both an Anterior fusion c6/c7 and discectomy/laminectomy l5/s1. My doctor said my neck issues were more important and did that first 6wks apart. I hope you all the best and keep us posted on what your surgeon says.

Re: Just told I have Herniated Disc's in Neck and Ruptured in Spine w/Questions ?

I just wanted to add that I waited several years to take care of my neck issues. recovery has been very rough, and was told that if I had taken care of it earlier I may not have some of the issues that I have now . I would also stress that you get several opinions and research your doctor, make sure that you are comfortable with him or her and his bedside manner. that will be very important to your recovery. Everyone is different so it is hard to say how long it will take you to get back on your feet.

going in with a positive attitude will mean a lot. as well as your health before surgery and how you take care of yourself after the surgery. Sounds like you have a lot of issues going on with your spine and I would be very careful on how you proceed. Good luck and keep us posted on how you're doing and what you decide.

Question Re: Just told I have Herniated Disc's in Neck and Ruptured in Spine w/Questions ?

Thank you all for your replies, I 1st have to get my Gallbladder removed which will happen by the end of this year then next year I will start on the Neck and Back issues. I am having blood pressure issues because I'm having such probs with the meds they keep putting me on so I needto get that straight before I even think of letting them cut on my Neck and Back.

Those of you that had surgeries on the Neck like what I have to have done, Did they go through the front part of your Neck or in the back of Neck ? My aunt in NC has had 4-5 surgeries and they went through her throat for one Neck surgery and then on another through the back of her neck. It scare me to even think of having to have these operations.

The Dr I am going to has been checked out, He came highly recommended and has actually operated on my hubby's niece's spine which was a very complex operation. He has a great bed side manner as well. If I wanted to do more checking on him though, how do you go about doing that for any Dr ?

Thanks

************Good luck with the GallBaladder removal my daughter had this done after her first child. She was in a lot of pain prior but afterward was about two weeks and she was back to herself.... She was in her early twenties. It was an emergency she went in with a belly ache and came out a week later one less Gallbladder.*****************

******I had mine done via the anterior neck... the surgery itself was very successful I found out later it was all my other issues that caused all my pains Although I started having migraines for the first time in my life with in a week post op. That was me though and I waited way to long. I had nerve damage and my spine was so compacted it took a long time for the nerves to realize they were free. Not everyone is the same. My sister in law had the same surgery as I did and she had the perfect recovery she is back to work and leading a normal life...******
