I just lost my surgeon before my post op appt!!!

I just need to vent before I explode. I got a phone call today to cancel my scheduled appt for tomorrow with my surgeon for my 2nd post op appt (I am 5 months post op double t-lift lumbar fusion of L4/L5 & L5/S1. I'm apx 50% better per my PT report and my discussions with my PT.
The reason my appt was being cancelled?: my dr has moved out of the state! She then said I could feel free to find another dr somewhere else or that they had a dr there. I said well, how soon can I see that dr, as I'm in the middle of recovery, so she said Dec 21st, so I took it. But I am SO ANGRY: I used to work for a Dr. myself: you know at least a month or so in advance if a dr is leaving a practice. And we would call all the patients and inform them, along with mailing them a letter and inform them, and give them a chance to come in and see the dr one final time. Here I am not told until 24 hours before my appt? I just got my xray done as well, and also my lawyer needs my current med records as he is trying to get my paychecks for me as I got hurt at work. I'm so frustrated! I did leave a message for my lawyer and I'm sure he will call me tomorrow.
I really, REALLY loved my surgeon, he did excellent work, and was supposed to fix my cervical next. I honestly cannot imagine having to trust anyone else to touch me surgically.

Re: I just lost my surgeon before my post op appt!!!

That is pretty irresponsible...and I would be very upset, too. I wonder if something happened that kept him from following appropriate protocol for leaving a practice?

Is the doctor offered to you a spine specialist? If so, you may as well stay at the same clinic, as it will be difficult to find someone new to take over your case at this point...particularly if they aren't familar with your surgeon's "work." Plus maybe you can find out the real scoop on what happened....

Re: I just lost my surgeon before my post op appt!!!

Thanks. That is what I am thinking. I told her that I felt I should stay there considering I am in mid recovery. I plan on telling the Dr. I will see (he is the owner of the practice she made a point to tell me) that I did not appreciate being informed 24 hours before my appointment, that I should have been informed much sooner and allowed to see him or make a decision as to whom to see with ample time. I'm just appalled. I mean, so far throughout my ordeal I had a phone call one am to say all my appts were being cancelled at the 1st clinic I was going to as workers comp denied my claim and I had to literally scramble to find my own new dr. Now I get another sudden phone call telling me I have lost another dr, a dr I trusted completely and who did amazing work on me surgically and I intended from our previous conversation that he would be the one to fix my neck as he said he would and could but first thing was my lower back as I have multiple issues. I'm just angry like I said and not thrilled about seeing a complete stranger let alone having to wait a few weeks now and I was so ready to see him tomorrow as also today something happened in my mid-back and even my PT was glad I was going to see him as he is concerned about this new issue, UGH!
Thanks for letting me vent. Maybe I can sleep now having gotten that off my chest.

Re: I just lost my surgeon before my post op appt!!!

Sorry to hear about this. I work for a clinic and it's very unusual for a dr. to leave that suddenly unless they've been ASKED to leave. I think it was very wise that you are staying with the same practice-your records are there which is very helpful to your new dr. Good luck and I hope you get some answers!

Re: I just lost my surgeon before my post op appt!!!

Something may have occurred and may explain why you werent notified. something unexpected.
I've had doctors that have retired and there were letters that have gone out about them retiring and who was overtaking the practice etc.
But there should have been some notice to you as the patient so that it wasnt unexpected. Sounds like it was handed poorly.

Re: I just lost my surgeon before my post op appt!!!

I agree with teteri66, some thing seems amiss here...keep with the clinic and see what you can find out when you have your next appt. Getting the "owner" might be better...?
I too am in recovery from L-5 S1 TLIF Nov 6 2012 and prior to that was my C5-6 ACDF Aug 4, 2012. I am curious about your recovery and Pt. What are they having your do in PT? I have not begun yet. I was told wait until 6 weeks. I am only at 4weeks.
PS my neck is MUCH improved no more muscle spasms, neck pain and constant headaches.
