Re: l4 l5 s1 fusion

It depends on how flexible you were to begin with. I could put my palms on the floor before, and now that I am healed and completely fused, I can do it now with my fusion, L3 - S1.

L5-S1 has little ability to move to begin with, so you are really only talking about making one level immobile.

You will just need to resist bending until you are well along in your bone growth.

Now, if you are asking about bending backward, that is a different story. Once fused, the ability to put the spine in extension is very limited...but most people aren't bothered by this loss.

Re: l4 l5 s1 fusion

I had this 5 months ago. I am learning new ways to "bend", involving more of hips and basically pushing my butt back alot to try and explain it to you. I also do squats now and basically you learn better/improved ways to move, etc. But do NOT do this on your own-insist on Physical therapy and lots of it-some don't get any, my dr wasn't going to give me much but I insisted to him that I wanted as much as my ins would cover as I wanted to be in BETTER physical shape post op than I was preop as I was never in shape in my life, could never touch my toes, etc. So I'm still looking at apx 2 more months if not more of PT and like I said, i've been doing pt since day #2 and I am 5 months post op.
