please help L5-S1 fusion

Why im in so much pain !! I had Spinal Fusion at L5 S1 almost 1 year today. Still getting massive muscle spasms after sitting in an ordinary dining chair or sitting in a car seat the pain goes on and on and on until i get in my reclining chair or i lay down on the bed. The pain shoots round into my hip but the pain starts in the left side of the fusion at the point of the scar. Ive tried most medications but these have no effect at all i also had anti inflamatory injection in the trigger point with no effect whatsoever. Mri scans show nothing wrong. It has taken over my life and now im afraid to go out of the house because its hard to drive anymore or walk more than 100 yards without my back seizing up, also it really hard to sleep.Im at my wits end with this nightmare.

Re: please help L5-S1 fusion

Welcome to the board. I am sorry you are in so much pain, especially this long after your fusion.

Before I go any further, I would like to know what type of fusion you had. Where is your incision?

Re: please help L5-S1 fusion

Did the surgeon go in from the front, the back or is your incision on the side?

Do you mean it hurts when you press on the incision? In any case, a year post surgery, it shouldn't hurt to press on the area where the surgery was done.

Re: please help L5-S1 fusion

Hi I too had the same exact surgery in the same place. I made a year last month and have the same problem. It shouldn't hurt when you push on it,but it does. My back hurts constantly and I also have pain in my butt and all the way down my right leg. I'm on neurontin which helps with my leg but not with my butt and back. The past two months I've had a procedure every two weeks I'm am finally done with the RFA on both sides. I completely understand how you feel. It's very painful, draining, and frustrating. You are not alone!

Mylife39 I feel the same time. My neurosurgeon even said he wished he hadn't done the surgery bc now I just have more problems and more pain. A waste of time, money, and pain.

Re: please help L5-S1 fusion

Dear mylife39, Welcome to healthboards. Im so sorry that you are having so much pain. I have chronic back pain and i know how grueling it can be & i couldnt make it without pain medicine. Are you still seeing your neuro or ortho surgeon? Has anyone recommended pain management for you?

Re: please help L5-S1 fusion

Do some research on a ketamine infusion, I had an L5-S1 infusion in July my post operative pain was so intense and mY surgeon had left town after my surgery. My pain mgmt doc did a ketamine infusion and it was amazing for about a month. I am however having serious pain in my hip and down the back of my left leg. I am going to have an X-ray and an injection in the hip joint Friday.

Re: please help L5-S1 fusion

I am so very sorry you are going through this. I joined this board today to see if anyone else is going through what i did and what I am...and I found you! I too had a fusion at L5/S1 with a discectomy and laminectomy with bone used from my hip. About 4-5 months after the fusion, I started pt, but I was hurting so much. I was developing hip pain, bot hips, and pain that would shoot down my legs- all the way, again, both sides. The pain was growing more intense and having started pt, I eventually felt I couldn't get past a certain point because the pain was so bad. So, another trip to the surgeon, a ct scan to show that there was never a solid fusion formed. So I went in for another surgery. This surgery was a doozy...it was an anterior/posterior fusion of L5/S1 with hardware, donor bone, my own bone from the opposite hip this time, and a laminectomy. A small surgery lasting about 10 hrs. I was convinced I was going to be so much better off at this point, how could I not after going through all that. I slowly eventually started to try to go back to work after 9 months off after second surgery. I went back 1/3 time, them 3 months later full time. I was still going to pt 2-3x's a week working on strengthening and stretching. I was convinced this was going to work...you couldn't tell me it wasn't. I wasn't sleeping, I was hurting all the time, it was horrible...but I still tried to work. Pain increasing in my hips, buttocks and shooting down legs. Got pregnant, and believe it or not, not in as much pain as when I wasn't pregnant . Of course a c-section. After baby, could hardly hold her, back spading all the time, couldn't stand for long periods of time, same with sitting, so I did a lot of lying on the couch with my baby. Went back to dr, more X-rays, a ct scan and I'm told that structurally, there is nothing wrong with the fusion. Meanwhile, he also tells me I am probably developing a disk bulge at L4 since that area is taking on more work that it was ever meant to. So that was something that was new to me and not mentioned prior to surgery that MANY people develop other issues at either the levels above or below where the fusion has occurred - which of course makes sense because something has to do the work, even if it wasn't meant to initially. So at this point, I can no longer work. As far as sensitivity to the area, I have ALWAY been hyper sensitive over the incision sight on my back. It is ridiculously tender...still 17 yrs after the surgery. Someone had thought the hardware is causing the pain. Who knows.
I go to pain management now, and take medicines I never thought I would have to. I get injections in my back to try to help with some of the low back and hip pain and it does help some - I'll take whatever bit of improvement I can get.ive also tried all different types of therapy including acupuncture, aqua therapy and most recently, massage therapy - which I have found is helping keep spasms and such at a more manageable level. My pain dr is truly stumped at why I have so much tenderness at the incision sight. As he said " as often as you've been sliced and diced, I'm surprised you can actually feel anything and yet you are more sensitive that normal" . Lucky me I guess.
I did have a spinal cord stimulator implanted ( like an internal TENS unit) , which of course had to be done over also. But, I was getting some relief with it, so I wanted it. That called for a 6 " incision between my shoulder blades along my spine to insert wires up against certain nerves. Those wire are connected to a battery that has been implanted under the skin on the upper portion of my right buttock. You use a hand held devise to activate it, turn it up and down and change programs.
So this VERY long response is to let you know a few things, you for sure are not alone (I totally thought I was at the time and thought I would lose my mind- from lack of sleep /pain) , that until you get some answers, don't stop searching. I know I felt that ...it's gonna get better, it has to get better...and thought touching it through would get me over the hump -Wrong! You know your body better than anyone, you know what doesn't feel right. Find a specialist and go. Your fusion is done, but you can possibly have nerve issues now. I'm still in the process of finding out why I'm in all the pain that I'm still in. My pain has progressed because I feel like my whole body is always sore and I feel like my joints are so very achy, and lets not forget the utter fatigue that comes with battling chronic pain. Try to keep your stress levels down, stress increases pain. When you aren't being taken seriously enough, find a dr who will. (Yup, I'm doing that now too) . You will find a way to deal with all this. Now I'm not saying your pain will completely go away, but you are still early enough in the process to see if you can get a handle on it sooner rather than later. Not like me, sitting here 18 yrs after I was hurt. If you have fam around, don't be afraid to ask for help (another mistake of mine because I was always the one who helped everyone else, so to ask was hard) , rest when you need to. If you are over doing, you are going to find yourself choosing between continuing to do it but pay the price the next day or possible two, or if you stop, you can rest and then come back to the project refreshed. It depends on what your doing and how important it is to you. I've help my kids trying to teach them how to saw...throw a lacrosse ball (which I used to coach) my guilt of saying no to her was too overwhelming and I would do my best to help her....but the next 2 days I would be bed ridden. So, know your body and what it's limitations are, definitely sleep with pillows under your knees and a body pillow in front of you (I also sleep with a big fat pillow behind me to help support my back). Don't give up, hound the dr and get some answers. I hope it all works out for you.

Re: please help L5-S1 fusion

I had fusion at L4/L5 & L5/S1 in 2000. 1 year later I was still in pain but less than before fusion. The surgeon took out the hardware and I was pain free for approximately 7 years. In 2008, an ortho surgeon wanted to do another fusion above the first site. Never going to happen! I went to a neuro surgeon and he did a decompression. Now I'm having problems in the sacral region. I'm getting close to filing for disability since my desk job requires sitting which is the worse thing a fusion patient can do. I made it 13 years though! Good luck!
