what medication to try

hi I had a radio frequency nerve ablation a week ago today and so far no relief at all, so back to dr. to find some kind of pain medication to try and get the pain under control. So he has started me on tylenol with codeine and so far not helping started with 1 pill than 1 1/2 pills now today will try 2 pills at a time and if doesnt help guess call back to dr and try something else wondering if anyone has any suggestions. Like hydrocodone just want relief when sitting, thats when its the worst for me. Thanks any ideas much appreciated.

Re: what medication to try

I'm sorry to hear the the RFA isn't giving you any relief. When I did mine, I was told that I wouldn't have any significant changes until 4-6 weeks and to be patient. So I waited and waited, and nothing! I was, and still is on Tramadol, which so far has been the best thing that I've taken to lessen the effects on the nerves without making me feel overly sluggish. After my post-op for the RFA, it was determined that surgery would be the next step. I was disappointed, yet knew that this was where I was heading since I had tried everything else. (injections, blocks, PT, and the RFA)

I'm scheduled for a TLIF on Jan 2. I'm a bit anxious because I so want to feel better, but scared because besides for having my children, I never stayed in the hospital for a surgery such as this. But with the support of my family, friends, and forums such as this, I am confident that everything will turn out just right.

Good luck with speaking to your doctor. I honestly think that he or she will tell you to be patient and try to give you something to calm you down in the meantime, but it might not take away your pain completely. Its just enough for you to cope with, if you know what I mean.

Re: what medication to try

What is your diagnosis or what is causing your pain? What type of symptoms are you having? Did you have a diagnostic nerve block prior to the RFA procedure?

Re: what medication to try

hi thanks for your quick response so what kind of surgery are you going to have, they will not consider surgery for me, I was told left lumbar radiculpathy, its the L 5 nerve. I have some arthritis on my left facet joint.I have had the injections, facet block, medial block, and now the RFA Doctor agreed to have me try hydrocodone so will see going to try it tonight with supper,I tried tramadol and I couldnt believe it made me sick in the middle of the night. So hope things go well for you, keep in touch maybe we can be of comfort to each other, seems like people dont understand back pain unless they have experienced it themselves.Been 2 years for me and just cant figure things out for me.

Re: what medication to try

Definitely! I feel the same. Even though my husband is very supportive, he does not truly understand the pain that I am going through. For me, I have DDD. My surgeon told me two years ago that I needed to have the surgery, but I refused. So from there I tired everything else, and came back with my tail between my legs. The TLIF is a transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion. Basically, they remove the disc from your the side of your tailbone, closest to the hip area opposed to at the tailbone mark or through the abdomen.

In my opinion, it was the orthopedic surgeon that suggested the surgery two years ago, since I refused he sent me to PM. PM kept trying procedure after procedure to make me better. PM didn't want me to have surgery, but they couldn't fix me. It was only after the RFA that they realized it was a losing battle and suggested that I see the surgeon again. That was after two years mind you!! If you really want to consider the surgical route or want another opinion on your back, I'd suggest you go and see another doctor. Trust me, I know how it feels to be miserable and I've been very depressed lately because I can't do simple things like grocery shop. I'm here for you!!

Re: what medication to try

they say I am not a surgery candidate and I have been sent here and there for 2 years, I feel nov of 2010 and a couple months later I started having this pain when sitting and had the mri had a disco gram say its not my bulging disc, from there the back specialist sent me to pain management and she had blood test, basic xray showed nothing, she did emg and thats when she said L5 nerve, did physical therapy, water therapy, chiropractor 15 treatments there and got $42.62 for every session. was to mayo in sept and they did a repeat mri, lumbar spine xray, and thats where I had the injection, facet block, but than my health insurance said I couldnt go back there because what they were doing I could do in networking!!! so I said fine you find me a doctor and you set it up so they did and so had the medical nerve block and I seem to get about 6hrs relief, so thats why he agreed to the nerve ablation but its a week today and no help, like I said sitting and walking are the worst for me.Yes after I asked you what your surgery was I googled it, I should have done that first before asking you that. I just cant believe with all the technology that they cant figure out back pain. Yes my husband has been supportive too, but just the other night after he went to bed I was in the bathroom having a good cry, I just want to be able to sit in the chair at night without the ice pak!!! as they say I want my life back.I even asked this last doctor if maybe we were going down the round road maybe my pain is coming from the sacroliac joint but he wouldnt even consider that he said go back to your family doctor or to the back specialist you were at well that specialist that I started off with did the disco gram and than shipped me off to pain management wasnt going back to him so called my health insurance and said ok now what so she is the one that said go back to your family dr and work with him to try pain medicine, which ya ok but how many times do I do that with a $15 copay for every pill I try!! I told her which I had a money tree or would win the lottery!!!! I am a home care aide and some days my work really makes the back hurt, but I just push through it.
