What have I done to my back?

About three weeks ago I was at the shop where I volunteer. Someone left a box on the counter, so I moved it. It had clothes on the top, so I assumed that was all that was in it... I slid it from the counter, and got hold of it, and it was then that I realised it wasn't just clothes..... It had books in over half of it, but only a thin layer of clothes over the top -_-

Anyway, I dropped it, only I kept hold of it if that makes sense, so I ended up suddenly bending down and might have twisted my back while I tried to stop it from flipping over completely and dropping from a great height, in case anything breakable was in it.

I didn't think anything more of it. I had a bruised knee from where the box hit that, but nothing more. The next day however I became aware of a pain in my upper back between my shoulder blades. It hurts when I twist around, if I stretch my shoulder blades (by putting my shoulders forward), sometimes when I bend down and when I'm in bed and turn over.

I didn't bother with it, just popped a couple of pills to kill the pain, but it's still there... what could I have done to it that's lasted for 3 weeks?

Re: What have I done to my back?

I am not really sure what you did, but for it to last 3 weeks concerns me. If it was a simple pulled muscle I would think you would have had some relief by now.

Have you take anything for it like Tyelenol? If it persists I think you should be checked out by a doctor to see if something is going on via X-rays etc. Did you try heat or ice packs?

I would check it out if I were you.

I've had Panadol and Paracetamol, but nothing more. And as for heat-packs, I have tried lying with a hot water bottle against that area to help.

I thought it was a pulled muscle as well which is why I left it this long - I was sure it would go away, but obviously it hasn't. I will be seeing a doctor soon hopefully.

Thanks for your response!

Re: What have I done to my back?

I think if it were a muscle you would have shown signs of impoving. But if not and medication isnt doing much then time for a consult. Good luck.

Re: What have I done to my back?

Hi, I guess you are going to pcp? So make sure you tell them you've already tried resting it. An X-ray will only show bone not disc problems so an mri would be the test you need.

I would try ice for the pain as well helps with muscle spasms.

If the pcp won't order the mri ask for referral to neurosurgeon or pain management specialist. They will order it.

Refrain from any lifting bending twisting until you get it figured out.

Hope this helps cathy

Thanks again guys. I noticed that my shoulder blade has actually swollen... the "crease" where the shoulder blade juts out is much further down on my right shoulder if that makes any sense, so it is swollen quite far down. I'm going to phone the doctors tomorrow for an appointment - the fact it has swollen worries me even more now!

I'll let you know how things go.

Re: What have I done to my back?

I'll set my phone onto a timer to take a picture, thanks for the suggestion! I've got some of those Deep Freeze patches to try out, but they don't seem to be as "soothing" as they claim. I'll move onto frozen peas next!
