lumbar and cervical surgery question

So I met with my ortho spine specialist today and its now recommended I have a c5 /6 disc replacement and a l4 fusion. He wants to do the neck first since the recovery is shorter.

What I'm wondering(I forgot to ask him). Do u think there's a chance of doing them both at the same time in order to save money and disability benefits? Is like to miss as little work as possible.

TIA

Re: lumbar and cervical surgery question

I'm not sure you could even convince your surgeon to perform both at once. Most of us that have had fusions would regard it as a bad idea. There's only so much one can deal with at a time....There may be valid medical reasons for doing one section at a time, but I do not know what it is. But from a practical standpoint, you would barely be able to function if both areas were done at once.

You are having an artificial disc put in?

Re: lumbar and cervical surgery question

Have you had more than one opinion? Where is the disc replacement being done?

Re: lumbar and cervical surgery question

I wondered because I don't know of anyone doing ADR in Wisconsin. It seems to have kind of fallen out of favor.

I think the primary reason surgeons do not like to do both areas at once is due to the instability issues. Did you ask your clinic if they would make an accommodation for you?

Re: lumbar and cervical surgery question

They are done for different purposes. A fusion is usually done if there is a chance the segment is or will become unstable. ADR has never caught on here the way it has in Europe. It's great when it works and there are no problems. It is almost impossible to remove when something goes wrong.

Just be sure you have a highly skilled surgeon who has done many ADRs and is known to have good results...and no lawsuits filed against him.
