Herniated discs 5 months +
I'm 39 and someone who has exercised her entire life. About 5 months ago I started working in an office ( I switched chairs 3 times to no avail) and developed sharp pains in my lower back whether I was seated, exercising, etc. It became so intense that I went to a back specialist who had me do an xray which showed early signs of disc degeneration in my lower spine. He told me to exercise and take ibuprofen. I did this for 2 weeks and the pain increased to the point I could barely move without a back spasm. I went back and requested an MRI (which they were reluctant to give me). The MRI showed 2 herniations (L4/L5) and spinal stenosis. They recommended spinal injections, which I declined as I have not heard anything positive about them. I went to my PCP who prescribed steroids and PT. I felt relief the 1st day of steroids and not much from PT. I'm nearing the end of my steriods and the muscle spasm pain is coming back in force when I am in the office. The PT said I am asymptomatic for herniations, which isn't true as muscle spasms are a sure sign. I cannot slip back into the pain I was in a few weeks ago and welcome advice from anyone who has overcome this problem. I'm going to discontinue PT as it is not helping, but am continuing my stretches and hope to start using the ellipitical machine (if I can).
