Tightness, Stiffness In Lower Back While/After Walking or Standing

For years, I have had chronic pain, tightness/stiffness in my lower back during and after walking or standing. It's gotten so bad that I can no longer walk or stand more than 15 minutes before I have to sit down. My mother had arthritus as long as I could remember. I'm a 50 year old guy who's otherwise relatively healthy. What could be causing this tightness and stiffness?

Dear lizard, Welcome! What tests have you had, what kind of dr is treating you, do you have a diagnosis? If i were you i would see a spine specialist aka, spine neurosurgeon or orthopedic spine surgeon but only after seeing my PCP first for xrays, possible MRI & PT &/or muscle relaxer or NSAIDS etc if that is included in his plan for me after telling him that i couldnt stand longer than 15 minutes. I hope that you get better & im sorry that you are hurting.

Re: Tightness, Stiffness In Lower Back While/After Walking or Standing

Welcome to the board.

The human spine begins its aging process in our 20s. Most people are not aware of this as it doesn't usually cause pain, but the discs begin to lose moisture, and gravity begins to take his toll.

Most people have some level of arthritis going on in the spine. I would imagine that you do, too, and it is causing the stiffness in the back.

You may have a bit of stenosis -- this is a narrowing of a passageway that is used by the spinal nerves as they leave the central canal and go out to the limbs. Sometimes a facet joint will enlarge or develop little osteophytes that help to cause the narrowing of the foramen or they push into the thecal sac that contains the bundle of nerves located in the central spinal canal.

Have you noticed that it feels a bit more comfortable to lean on a cart when shopping in a store? Or if you bend slightly forward does it relieve the pain a little?

Does anyone know what the best exercises for the spine are? Like you, but not to the same degree, I have stiffness and try to stretch, curve and flex my spine as much as possible using pilates and yoga-style moves.
