I used this years and years ago - several times too - and I loved it, but I didn't do it myself. I had a girlfriend do it once, I think my mom did it once, my husband did it once...it's really pretty simple but I wouldn't suggest doing it yourself as you can't really see what you're doing as well as someone else can. My hair is a medium brown too and I left it on until it was pretty blonde but that was what I wanted. You have to remember that this was back in the 70's and we didn't have some of the techniques back then that we have today for highlights, but for cost, you really can't beat what you bought. The growing out was pretty much the same as it would be no matter what technique you used - the lighter the color, the more obvious the growing out will be. I think the box suggests a test strand that you keep checking for color until it reaches the shade you're happy with, doesn't it? If not, you want to start checking at the minimum amount of time as some people will absorb the color alot faster than others.
