I was wondering if anyone had any tips for avoiding the sun because of skin cancer risks.

I use a large brim hat and use spf 40.

A friend of mine who is disabled but does a lot of walking mentioned that she always goes to the shaded part of the street when she walks. I know this sounds simplistic, but I never started doing it until now.

These aren't necessarily tips for avoiding the sun - but tips for minimizing exposure to the most harmful rays.

1) Avoid the sun from 11am-3pm - or at least minimize your exposure. (some say 10am-4pm)
2) Always wear a sunscreen - even if it's cloudy - of at least SPF 15, although SPF 30 is better.
3) Apply more sunscreen every 2 hours & after sweating or swimming.
4) Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going outside.
5) For good full spectrum protection, the sunscreen must contain zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, avobenzone (which may also be listed as Parsol 1789 or butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane), Mexoryl SX, or Tinosorb. These must be listed as part of the "active" ingredient list. If one of those isn't part of the active ingredient list (it doesn't count if it is just part of the regular or "other" ingredients) you are not applying adequate UVA protection and that is dangerous for your skin.
6) Be sure to apply enough sunscreen - about 1 oz. (approx. what would fill a shotglass) for the entire average-sized body. For the face, 1 tsp.
7) Use wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses and sun-protective clothing.
8) Don’t forget sun protection for your lips - this is especially important with snow or water sports.

fm5- im not that good with dealing with heat/the sun! I complain about it daily!

I also try the method of walking in the shade...hmm..what else....i just don't go out to be honest. Sometimes when I go to parks, i do sit in the shade....take plenty of cold drinks with u...u can place them on your forehead to cool u down

as well as keeping u hydrated.

Visors help to keep sun off your face as well.....lol.sorry i aint much use!

Another I thought of, is, when you park your car (like in a mall or at work) try and park in a place where you can walk out in the shade.

A little background: there is skin cancer on BOTH sides of my family. (I come from a very Irish background.)

My sister had melanoma on her nose. The dermatologist said that she had to go down and aspirate the tissues in her nose months later to see whether it had spread. If it had, they would have had to remove the bone in her nose! Thank God it hadn't!

I am very careful. Hope you guys are too!
