Ingrown hairs usually occur when you shave or pluck body hair. When the hair grows back, instead of growing straight up and out of the hair follicle, it curls back into the skin as it is growing. These hairs often cause tiny little infections where they are located. Ingrown hairs look like little red bumps, and often itch. Sometimes they will contain pus, and other times you will be able to see the ingrown hair curled beneath the skin.
You can prevent ingrown hairs by exfoliating (rubbing skin vigorously with a rough object, such as a loofah in the shower, or towel), by applying an antiseptic substance to the problem area of skin after hair removal, or by using a different method of hair removal, such as waxing (although this can sometimes cause ingrown hairs, too). If left to themselves, ingrown hairs will usually grow out and heal themselves.
