has anyone had their nails damaged from artificial nails? i know they ruin your real nails--but ive had them on sooooo long, i cant live without them. also has anyone had nail fungus from them, and how did you cure it? i find that so many nail salons are so dirty, and not very sanitary, that's SCARY!

had very damaged nails from acrylics. fungus very hard to get rid of. youll need prescription and have to take it for a year. I now apply french tips only, file to shape and glue and polis over them with a clear or sheer polish, otherwise you will see line where tip and nail meet, being careful not to get glue too close to cuticle. this works really well for me and no one can tell its not a french manicure. also removal only takes a two minute acetone soak cause no acrylic top coat. of cours these are not as strong but mine last about 3 weeks except for maybe a repair here and there. takes some practice but the acrylics really do a number on your nails after a long period of time.

Any type of fake nail ruins your nails. Bacteria can get stuck underneath and cause fungus, and you are also suffocating your nail. It makes your nails thinner and after you take them off, they look horrible. You have to wait till they grow out so there's no glue spots and scratches and all that stuff that happens when you take off fake nails. They do sell stuff that's supposed to make your nails better after taking off fake nails. I saw it in a beauty supply store and I have no idea if it works at all!

I have had artifical nails for 7 years now and I have never had a fungus. I now have the gel put on and they are alot better for your nails. I try to take good care of my nails.

First - what are french tips and do you get them in a drugstore? I've never had acrylics but do wear the gels, I buy them in the store and do them myself, but I think I'd like to try these french tips you're talking about. Is there a particular brand you use? Also, I'm really confused about this fungus stuff as I've never had a problem myself. Is this something you get from unclean salons? I mean, what does it look like and how do you know you have it? Or is that a silly question? Is it usually only associated with acrylics? Because like I said, I wear the gels but don't like to wear polish, I like a natural look so my nails simply look like I have clear polsih on them, but if there was something on a nail that shouldn't be there, I'd see it right away because I can still see my real nail, which you can't do with acrylics, correct? So am I safe to assume that acrylics are more prone to it because it can't be seen until the acrylic nail is removed? (sorry for all the questions but I just got done reading a slew of posts about toenail fungus and am pretty freaked out right now)
