acrylic nails - Beauty & Cosmetics Message Board

Has anyone tried to do acrylic nails themselves? I got the kit today. I don't have the money right now to keep getting my nails filled professionally. I was wondering if any of y'all have tried this yourselves. A friend of mine does her own and they look good.

It seems like it wouldn't be too bad on one of your hands because your dominant hand would be able to do your other hand OK, but the reverse would be hard. And all the buffing and trimming sounds too messy.

I used to get them done. Now I do them myself, my friend is jealous she has to still pay $40 every 2 weeks. It wasn't really the money that was a problem for me, more of a time thing and they tend to get a little rough and hurt me sometimes. I've gotten so good, you cant even tell the difference now professional and my own.

I've done my own before lots of times, they turned out okay, but only after many, many, hours of practice. You have to make sure that the mixture (liquid and powder) isn't to thin or too thick, for me it was very annoying and time-consuming to try and get it just right. But maybe you have more patience than me.

Back then I did office work, but now I clean houses and have my hands in water a lot. So, I don't think they'd stay on good even if I got them done professionally. Unless, of course, I went to what I call the 'cement mixers' (MMA-type places, I forget what it stands for) where they put dental acrylic on your nails. That stuff stays on forever. But if you do break one? Oh man, owww!! Good luck!
