I think Jergens is fine for a guy -- because it doesn't look like faux-tan. It's not actually a color -- it's a non-colored cream that you would put on before going to bed, it works overnight and then you have color in the morning. Just shower and you're ready to go. It's not make-up (just in case that's what you're thinking)
However, if you really don't want to use a self-tanning cream, you could try going to a tanning salon and getting a spray on tan. It's the same idea as the Jergens, only you go into a booth (like a shower stall) and little nozzles spray you with a mist of tanning solution (it takes literally 20-30 seconds). You go home, wait 8 hours, shower and then you've got a tan. The spray on lasts about a week. You tell them what shade you want, so you could ask for the lightest available so that you don't look like an orange.
I've used both, and I personally think that the Jergens is more natural. No one knows that it's not my natural color (I'm pretty pale naturally too). Also - you can use the Jergens on your whole body. It's not just for face / arms.
Fore sure I wouldn't go into a tanning bed if you're really pale. In my experience, it just causes a burn (or a least a red tint) ... not to mention cancer!
Hope that helps
