Mascara - flakey & uneven.. tips?? - Beauty & Cosmetics Message Board

Hi all

I am hoping some of you can offer me advice with this. Every time I put on mascara, no matter what brand it is, it turns out clumpy/flakey. I have tried mostly Maybelline products because I hear they make fantastic mascara. The result for me is always the same, though..

I don't think I have abnormal eyelashes. Maybe I am just applying it wrong? I just stroke the wand upwards and outwards until they are coated and seperated from eachother, usually takes about 3-4 strokes. Even then, I end up with lashes that are unflatteringly clumped together, but I can't try to fix it because I'd end up having way too much mascara on!

Then, later in the day, the mascara looks very flakey and.. bad. I don't know if it's something I'm doing or if it is the mascara. I have tried Maybelline Triple Volum, Full and Soft, Featherlash, Great Lash, and now trying Lash Stylist. They are all non-waterproof except for Featherlash.

So, are there any mascara pro's who have some advice or perhaps recommendations for other brands?

I am not a mascara pro, but I also have the same problem. My eyeliner also rubs off quite a bit too and I end up lookin' a little goth towards the end of the night.

I always have the little mascara flakes after a few hours. I also use the same motion, upwards and outwards. I have tried a lot of L'Oreal products. I like the mascara I am using and I like Almay, but I still have the flakes. I know I am not really any help, but I was just saying I have the same difficulties

here are some tips: One: dont pump your mascera wand in to the container before applying to lashes, this makes the mascera thicken when you apply it there fore some does not dry all the way and it later clumps off, Two: start at the base of lashes with pressure then lift lightly to ends. Three: if you use a curl lash iron machine curl before putting on mascera.

I have heard about the mascara-pumping thing before, which I haven't done anyway. I also wipe the wand clean every now and then to take off old, dried mascara as well as other unwanted things (skin flakes/eye lashes), but that doesn't help very much. :|

What kind of mascara do you use?

Here is a tip I got from a magazine to help with clumps: Instead of just moving the wand straight from roots to ends, try doing the same but jiggling it a little back and forth.. it helps stop clumps and separate lashes more!

Also, have you ever tried buying some mascara wands (just plain ones, no mascara with it), and combing through your lashes with the clean wand after applying mascara? It helps a BUNCH and you can buy these at any drugstore for very cheap.

One last thing.. there are mascaras with a different type of brush that may help also. A lot of mascaras that some people love don't work for me, so it's different for every person! I love Full N Soft, but it won't work for EVERYBODY. Max Factor and Covergirl make special mascaras with a different type of wand, kind of like a spikey looking one. The Covergirl one is called Exact Lash and comes in a purple tube.. I like it a lot! It separates well and doesn't get clumpy and gross. I haven't tried the Max Factor one, but I'd like to!

If all else fails, try a clear mascara. They don't offer as much thickness and length, but it defines them a little more. I hope something listed above works for you!!
