Help! How do buy pressed powder? - Beauty & Cosmetics Message Board

Hi ladies.

I have never worn makeup before. I want to buy a small compact of pressed powder to dab on my oily face for shine control. I do not want a coverup, just this light powder.

A question...I was looking at the small compact thingamabobs in the drug store, and the colors are things like "Natural Beige" or "Ivory". How the heck do I know what color to buy? I have typical Caucasian skin. I'm not pale and I'm not olive. I'm right in the middle.

I'm sure trial and error is one option, but I can't see wasting $5 to $9 per compact until I find the right shade.

Any advice?

Most people will tell you to try and match the skin color on the INSIDE on your wrist. That is typically closest to your true skin color (minus what the sun does to us!). Lots of them will have a color chart that you can hold up to your skin.

Also, don't think of it as "wasting" - don't be afraid to take back make-up that you don't like! Almost any major drugstore chain and the big stores (like WalMart, etc.) all allow returns on cosmetics. Don't be afraid to use it and keep your receipts! I take stuff back allll the time. They can't resell but they do return to the manufacturer for partial credit.

I suggest a "translucent" powder. It is much more forgiving, offers no coverage, will help with the oil/shine control, is easily blended, is light and color match is almost not important, it being translucent on the skin.

Hi Sue, I have very oily skin. The only foundation I've found that doesn't cause any additional problems is mineral makeup - now that everyone is on the mineral makeup bandwagon, you can likely find many brands in your local drugstore. Or if you live near an ULTA, their store brand is pretty good, doesn't contain bismuth [irritating for some].

Personally, I use silk powder to control oil on my no-makeup days. Takes away the shine instantly and silk powder has lot's of good stuff for your skin.

I LOVE the mineral makeup too. It's all I use. I didn't mention it because the OP didn't want coverage, but I agree, it's a fine choice for oil control plus sun protection.
