Bell's Palsy with Vertigo and Aches and Pains.

Hey everyone. I'm really hoping someone can give me some relief, because I am a massive worry wort when it comes to health issue. I was diagnosed with Bell's Palsy as of yesterday. It all started when I developed a cold. I soon started having shooting pains behind my ear and around my neck where it connects to the skull. One night, after brushing my teeth, I noticed that water was squirting out of one side of my mouth while I was rinsing my mouth out. Earlier, before that, I felt like both my eyes weren't shutting evenly. After being scared to death, I decided to get some sleep. I woke up the next morning with more of my face paralyzed on the left side. Of course, I continued to freak out, so I decided to call the doctor and get him to look at it. I told him what was going on and it did a few tests to check, but the only thing he figured it would be was Bell's Palsy because of my symptoms. He prescribed some Prednisone and some Valacyclovir. As of last night, I started having some vertigo. Since then, the pain behind my ear has kind of gone away, but the tightening of the left side of my face is still getting worse and, today, my vertigo was definitely keeping me from enjoying my day. It wasn't complete vertigo, just a sense of not being completely balanced. Nothing is paralyzed other than my face, but I started having some muscle aches tonight, which I figured were either part of the cold I've had OR part of the stress that I'm going through. Has anyone had similar symptoms?

Re: Bell's Palsy with Vertigo and Aches and Pains.

Hey, Erik. Those first symptoms you are describing is pretty much what I experienced when I had Bell's Palsy 4 years ago. When I went to the hospital, the ER doc had me squeeze his hands and walk around for a few minutes to rule out problems with my balance, which would indicate whether or not I had a stroke or neurological disorders. He told me right away that it was just Bell's Palsy

I would be somewhat concerned about the vertigo and muscle weakness, considering these occurred after the initial Bell's Palsy. You might want to go see a neurologist just so you can rule out more serious disorders. I did and it turned out I was fine. It will give you peace od mind. Remember, it is thought that Bell's Palsy is caused by a virus, so the fact that you had a cold/flu right before the onset suggests it is nothing more than that. However, to play it safe, if you start having extreme vertigo or muscle weakness, go to the ER

Re: Bell's Palsy with Vertigo and Aches and Pains.

Thanks for the reply, Michael! I stopped having the vertigo yesterday. I'm personally thinking it was either the weather or just my eye adjusting to being open all the time. Either way, whatever it was, I'm not having it anymore. The muscle pains and what not are also gone, as well. I would personally love to go see a Neurologist, but, sadly, the nearest Neurologist to me is about an hour away. I'm just gonna wait it out and see what develops in the next couple of days. I have another appointment with my doctor on Monday, so I'm gonna see what he thinks, also. If anything else comes up or gets worse, I will definitely be taking a trip to the Neurologist just to get some peace of mind.
