Not Wanting To Put Son On Medication - Bipolar Disorder Message Board

Hi,
My son is twelve we took him to a psychotherapist who refered him to a child phycholigist[probbly didn't spell that right].....Any ways they say he suffers from depression but now they wonder if he truely is really bipolar....I was just diagnosed as bipolar last year....Depression and so on runs in my family...
How do you truely now that it is time to put your child on medication???
I really don't want to but they keep mentioning it....I take him to counceling once a month with a psychotherapist....Also i'm not saying they are wrong but could it just be a change in lifte like adolesents.. Maybe i'm just in denial i truely don't want to see my child on medication....Any other way to go about this????

The diagnosis isn't as easy for Bipolar, but the following question still applies...

If you were told your child had diabetes would you put off giving him insulin?

I understand your apprehension about medicine, and your son. As parents its hard enough to make a decision without worrying if its the right one or not. But, at the same time, doctors know a lot more then us as parents. Thats why they are the doctors and we are the parents. If you are still scared to "just do it" . ASK questions of his doctor. I am bipolar and I take my medicine, but Im an adult and I am responsible for me, no one else. Good luck I know how you feel

I agree with Ruth...why should you delay in treatment when it could mean everything for your son? I understand being cautious, but don't wait!

Hi Again,
I am bi polar, my problem is i know how much i struggled with the medication that they gave me....Like for example one medication made ten times worse than what i really was within just days of taking it....My emotions on some of medications were just out of control...This is what i fear for my son.....As adults we know how to handle things better than children, how will he handle medication if it goes badly???This is my biggest fear....I now have found a medication that works for me....I find it scary enough for an adult to go through it, i just can't imagine children....Especially when it is your child.........
