Exclamation poss issue with son

I wonder if it’s just confusion or mental illness. Is it just a wild a** move on Lynn’s part or something else?
Here’s the story: Tues evening Lynn goes by the Navy recruiter office for a visit. I knew he was going. He came home and we got to talk about the issue for 20 minutes or so. He never said that he was enlisting. Well now, Wednesday morning the recruiter shows up at his school and pressures him into joining that day. And oh yes, they did call and ask Lisa if it was ok! She allowed that it was whatever Lynn wanted (meds talking?). The Navy recruiters proceed with the sign up or hold up as I call it. He was to go to the MEPS station on Friday morning for his physical. It’s there also that one takes the first oath. You know the one that you hold up the right hand.
Well I hear of this on Wednesday night about 6 pm and I go crazy. I literally have to take a walk out to the woods to vent. Let’s say that some of the trees will have a few less branches next spring. Lynn gets home from church around 8 pm and we discuss this. Meanwhile I’m searching for an out. I call and speak with Jeff. He has been a huge help. He speaks with Lynn and encourages him to think it over some more. I also spoke with my dad, my pastor, a good friend who was in the Army, and maybe a few others that I can not think of. Jeff was the most helpful.
My God! Lynn has a 4.0 GPA this semester so far. His overall GPA is about 3.0+ something. He has no disciple problems (all through high school he has yet to get a discipline slip). He is most respectful and follows direction to a fault. He has avoided outside issues like drugs, alcohol, and tobacco. He plays lead guitar for our church and is involved with the youth group as Youth President. I think he is to be nominated for the Trustees. If he does he will be the youngest person ever nominated and if he serves he may be the youngest to serve on the Trustees at our church.
The point is that with grades and other items Lynn should go to school first and then to the military if he chooses. He could go in as an officer instead of enlisted. He!!, he could get a full ride scholarship by doing the ROTC thing to a host of colleges. There are over 300 Navy colleges and probably a 1000 or more other ROTC programs out there to first rate colleges. Heck, they even pay a small salary to the students for being in the ROTC.
Furthermore, dad (me) is willing and able to foot the entire bill for Walter State for the first 2 years. I would just ask that he take the core classes like English 101, math 101,ect….
He has other choices too. They are just too many to mention.
Bottom lines for now we have him directed toward getting his education first and then see what happens. I sure hope that I did the right thing. I had harsh thoughts about this recruiter. I told him that he almost made me his enemy. I’m a supporter of our military. I believe that they allow us to maintain our freedom and I highly respect them. However, that SOB (son of a bisketteater) just wanted a body to fill his quota. Lynn would have spent the next 4 years swabbing decks, painting ships, or cleaning latrines. Man, was I mad! I still am to some extent.
HELP?

Re: poss issue with son

Mudhound, have you wondered if he is looking for a way out of his day to day situation?
Going to school might still mean he lives at home and I'm just wondering if "a legitimate way out" isn't a small part of this?
You'll probably recall that I'm not a parent, so I can't really speak to your fears - I just think you've been through so much for so long and this is almost the straw that breaks the camels back for you...
A Big Friend Hug,
Ruth
