Bipolar Disorder & Sleep Disorder....,

Hi ! To everyone

I decided to do a post, because I read about so many people having
sleep disorders, along with having BP disorder, and depression, in hopes
that I might be able to help someone.

My Motto : ' I only speak from my own experiences, realizing that we are
ALL different, and different problems and meds., affect us ALL differently.'

A couple of weeks ago, when I visited my BP Doctor, I told him about my
awful, disturbing ' sleep problem '. I have had it so long, about three years.
I snore so loud, and of course it is a terrible issue, so my Hubby and I
haven't slept together for about two years.

Recently, He has observed my snoring more, and told me that he noticed
that it seems I am struggling to breathe.
We didn't have a clue that this could be a very serious condition, until I
mentioned this to my BP Doctor about this.

He promptly made an appointment, for me to see a Sleep Specialist Doctor.
We went last week for my evaluation, and the Doctor is GREAT !
After He and my Hubby did most of the talking (after all, how could I know
how I look or sound, whilst I am sleeping....... ? Duuuuuh ?).
The Doctor thinks I may have ' sleep apnea ', which CAN be a very serious
condition,if not treated.

I was so excited when we went over my meds., I have to take every day,
as he thinks I will be able to get off some of them, which my BP Doctor says also !

We talked about my being unable to consentrate. The Doc said,
" I think we can help this TOO ! "
I told him that I can't stay focused. The Doc said,
" I think we can help this TOO ! " and on and on.....,

My next step is to camp out in the hospital, for my ' sleep study ' !
I am a bit scared, just not knowing what to expect, but I DO feel there
is HOPE out there. So, I am excited, and wanted to share this !

I will definately keep you posted. And, if anyone would like to shed some
light on this subject........, please DO !

I feel so special to be a part of this message board, and I Thank You ALL,
for your kindness and your always willing to help.

Gee Gee

Re: Bipolar Disorder & Sleep Disorder....,

Hi Gee Gee,

I have had problems sleeping in the past, before I was on meds, and sometimtes still, I suffer from insomnia. My husband also says I snore alot now and I never used to, but I thought that was just cause I'm getting older. He has threatend to leave our bed on occasion, but usually he just elbows me in the side, and makes me roll over. Although I have found him on the couch a morning or two when he just couldn't take it anymore...

I'm interested to hear what you find out when you go to the sleep clinic. It does seem like a lot of us bp's have trouble sleeping. I hope that everything works out for you. It's always nice hearing from you.

take care, talk to you later

Re: Bipolar Disorder & Sleep Disorder....,

<< Warning: don't get triggered, as this MIGHT be TMI ( some Californians seem to be such wimps that just giving them Too Much Information seems to make their eyes roll back ~ and sends them into pansy-colored spasticity )... >>>

Gee Gee... Right ON !!!

There is NO DOUBT that I have sleep apnea. I did have a septoplasty back in the mid 1980's (correction of a deviated septum). While they supposedly fixed the physical deviation - they cast no hope on curing the social one...

Regardless - I do actually stop breathing if I fall asleep, particularly if I'm flat on my back... Not much I can seem to do about that...

As for you ladies' husbands... what a couple of light-weights... Won't even sleep in the same bed due to snoring... Geez...

My wife has laughed horrendously when I'll be doing a sonic-boom snore, and then STOP BREATHING right in the middle of it - and even wake up !!! She thinks it's hilarious that I can wake myself up with a staggered snore...

Here comes the TMI (time for the lightweights to click outta here and stop reading this post)...

Her other outrageous laughter comes from my awakening over some unforgiveably LOUD flatulence that occassionally occurs (we eat meals wherein we're asked if we'd like some meat or pasta with our garlic and onions)... You KNOW it was a world class "pootie" (her word, not mine) when it even awakens the unconscious...

Despite her otherwise prudish ways (in some areas) it's a standing joke around here that you KNOW you're comfortable in a relationship when you let "fly" in front of your significant other... We're talking about when you're awake, in this case...

Now that I've revealed this, hopefully word will get around, and perhaps 10 million or so squeamish little Californians (hopefully SUV drivers) will decide to relocate far enough downwind (way past the Rockies) to escape my eternal south winds... Then, perhaps, gas and real estate prices can normalize, and life can go on...

Amazing, how a little flatulence can help solve major world issues !!!

The price we pay for gas !!!

Wish I had it that easy! I am always the one leaving the bed getting up with a kid. I think I would love to do a sleep study, preferably a few hours out of town, for maybe about a week or so...

Good luck Gee Gee! Love, Lori

Hi Heather,

Thanks for your sincere interest, and for your support, and
nice words of encouragement.

I have found that ' sleep apnea ', is a serious, and can be life threatening ' !
It's a great feeling that I will be able to receive the help I need.

I have a friend who has this, and she has to wear a ' C-PAP ', which is a
mask type contraption, that is worn while sleeping, to keep you from snoring,
and it helps you breathe....., keeps the oxygen flowing,
so I want STOP breatheing.

You may have heard of this before.
So, knowing what she goes through, and knowing there IS HELP and HOPE,
makes me feel like maybe I will perhaps live a longer, better life.

If Bipolar folks do have a problem, I think this is the way to go....,
to a ' sleep Specialist Doctor ', which is the only reason I did this Post
on here, was to try to help someone.

I am really upset. I went to my Doctor of Infectious Diseases yesterday,
and I didn't get a good report. Having this ' Chronic Epstein Barr Virus ',
AND ' Sjogrens Syndrome ', is pretty hard to hear about.
(I am in for being really sick, worse than ever, Heather).
These glands are so swollen, and painful, just below my ears,
and into my cheeks, especially my left one.
The swelling is about the size of a large egg.

I hope you have a great day.......,

I will get back to you a little later on....,

THANKS, Friend,

Gee Gee

Re: Bipolar Disorder & Sleep Disorder....,

Hi

I'm sorry to hear you're having continuing health problems in addition to your sleep disorder(and bipolar of course). It really does start to take over your life after a while dosen't it? I started to laugh when you said that I should go to a sleep clinic if I'm having problems, (I know it isnt funny) but I don't have time for any more doctor apointments or clinics. As it is, I am in some sort of doctors office, or clinic at least 3 days a week. Now it looks as though I have kidney damage from all the over the counter pain meds I have taken.

I'm going to a pain clinic now to get injections in my spine for my endo pain. I don't know how that's going to work out, but it's something you have to go back and do on a regular basis. On top of therapy, and psychiatrists apts, etc. who has time to be a full-time patient? I wanted to mention to you also about the pain you mentioned, you have to watch out for it, if it doesnt get better soon, that kind of pain can trigger a depressive episode.

On top of everything esle, (and this IS kind of funny) my dentist tells me I need braces. AT 35!! I had perfect teeth all my life, but they have been damaged from grinding them so much. My poor husband, all of my problems are going to put us in the poor house.

I will be thinking of you, and hope you feel better soon.

take care,

~~~heather~~~
Re: Bipolar Disorder & Sleep Disorder....,
Hi Heather
Thanks, as usual for being here for me. I'm sorry to hear that you are
having so much trouble. Please take care of yourself. I wish I had a magic
answer to your Endo problem. I just never had it again after having a baby...,
You know ?
However, I DO remember the PAIN, before then..,
Just know that you have to take care of yourself, FIRST !
OMG, I can't imagine these injections you are having.., gosh ! It makes me
hurt to think about this one.
I have a ZERO pain tolerance though. I guess from having back surgery,
and a few years after that came the knee surgery !
I know what you mean about having so many doctors, believe ME !
My list is getting longer, and longer.....,
I went back and read what I wrote ! How funny, I am such a dummy...,
Wouldn't it be great if all Bipolar folks could have a great life, if only they
could go to a sleep clinic !lol.
I seem to be having a pity party for myself lately, so I think I am already
having a depressive episode.............,
WOW ! I can't believe you have to have BRACES !!! Are you going to do this ?
Isn't there some sort of contraption you can get from your Dentist,
to put in your mouth, to keep you from grinding your teeth ?
My poor husband......., I don't think there's another one like him on the face
of the earth ! Sometimes I don't know how he stands me.
(But he hates to hear me say this). You know ?
My Daughters tell me that He has me spoiled.....,
He does EVERYTHING for me. I will tell you more about him later on...,
Like, right now, he's at the Grocery ! And, he will be bringing us home some
supper ! We have to leave town (it's so Po-Dunk, and small!), to buy
groceries.
You Take Care, and I will be thinking bout you...,
Gee Gee .....,
HI ! Lori..........,
Thanks for thinking of me. I will be at the sleep clinic, for my sleep study
sometime the end of this month !
I will keep ya'll posted.
Take Care........
And, let me hear from you..........,
Gee Gee
Re: Bipolar Disorder & Sleep Disorder....,
Hi Again,
Thanks for all the kind words. I'm sorry you are feeling kinda down. It's bound to happen when you are constantly dealing with one ailment after another. ( I thought I would maybe be dealing with some of this stuff when I was 60 or so, but not 35!!) I'm glad I have done all the fun things I have. Every time I had money in my twenties, I went on a trip, or did some fun activity with it, instead of saving it, or investing it. I always wondered if that was foolish, but I'm sure glad now!!
Ok, got off on a tangent there, sorry. Anyhow, you asked me about a mouth guard for my teeth. Yes, I do have one, and I have had one since I was about 22. But there were a few 'manic' years in there where I didn't need any stinking mouth guard because I was invinceable....(I also thought I could exercise for 4 or 5 hours every day, and starve myself) silly girl.
And so now, even with the mouth guard, my bite is off, and it's a chain reaction kind of thing. It's really no big deal. It's sort of funny cause my 12 year old son is getting braces too, so it will be cute. (He thinks so, anyway)
I don't think the shot thing is going to be too bad, I will let you know, but they do it under anesthesia, and they use an ex-ray machine, it's like getting an epidural. If it keeps me from being in pain all the time, I think it's worth it.
I have seen two more doctors, to get opinions, and they all think that a hysterectomy isn't going to really help me anyhow. I have adhesions all over my pelvic cavity. When it's that severe, it usually continues to grow.
I should feel incredibly lucky to have had my daughter, since I have had it for a long time before I had her. I had abdominal pain the whole time I was pregnant, my OB/GYN thought I just had a irritable uterus. He never did listen to me, so I changed docs.
So what is this ebstein bar disease? What does it do to you? It sounds awful, is it serious? I would like to hear more about it, if you have time....
love,
~~~heather~~~

Re: Bipolar Disorder & Sleep Disorder....,

Hey GG,

I will let you know how my epidural injection goes tomorrow. I have stuff posted on the pain management board, and the womens health board, too. I will go and read about your stuff. I hope you start feeling better soon.

My p-doc just put me back on prozac. I always thought that was bad for bp's, but I guess in combination with a mood stabilizer it's ok.

It's too bad about your crummy weather down there. Tornadoes are scary. I just watched that movie with Helen Hunt the other night. We are finally starting to have really nice weather up here. Thank god!! I think between that, and the prozac, I might just be ok

ttfn (ta ta for now)

Re: Bipolar Disorder & Sleep Disorder....,

Ps~

I used one of those 'Breathe Right' nose strips last night, and it worked like a dream!!
I cant remember when I have slept so well, my husband is thrilled that didn't wake him up snoring once!! It's not as high-tech as a sleep clinic, and it sounds like your sleep problems are more complicated, but you might want to give it a shot. It makes you feel like you can breathe better the minute you put it on...

ok, bye
