Obsessing about religion

Have any of you ever had a time when religion begins to occupy your every waking moment? I wake up thinking I'm bound for hell and go to sleep feeling the same way. My husband says some pretty scary behaviors are popping up again. My doctor increased my meds but it doesn't make any difference. I'm catholic and can't stop thinking that I am living in sin because my husband was married before.
I'm ready to freak out and I can feel it coming. Also my anorexia is back with a vengeance.

Re: Obsessing about religion

Pat, it sounds like your chemicals are getting off balance, which your husband is witnessing in your unusual behavior and your doctor is trying to treat with meds. It is extremely common for bipolars when they get ill/off balance to obsess over religion, particularly if they have a religious background as you do. And yes, I've been there myself, twice.

Unfortunately, it takes time for most psych meds to kick in and really make a difference. In the meantime please try to remind yourself that you're not seeing the world clearly right now, and not to take your religious preocupations too seriously. When you become healthy, they'll subside and become truth based again, not fear based. Hang in there. I've been in your shoes and I know it's hard. For now, please listen to those who love you and can give you sound encouragement, like your husband and your priest. Remember, if you've given your life to Jesus, you belong to Him and no one, not even you, can take that away. There is no sin bad enough that you can do that will make Him decide you're no longer His child and no longer promised eternity with Him.

Re: Obsessing about religion

Insofar as the exact fear you mentioned...

Have you spoken with a priest ? Mentioned it in confession ?

Might these actions help you allay your concerns ?

Re: Obsessing about religion

Thank you, guys, for all the feedback. I was not a particularly religious person until now since I rejected the doctrine that was crammed down my throat during my upbringing. But noe I feel God calling me back to the church. I have spoken with my priest who has told me that I cannot receive the sacraments until my husband's prior marriage is annulled. The priest was kind and forgiving but firm in his belief. I am going to make another appointment to see him because I think maybe I should have been more open with him about my being bipolar. I see my psychiatrist tomorrow and will let him know the meds aren't doing the trick.
I'll let you know what happens if I don't die and go to hell in the meantime. (I know it sounds crazy but that's where I'm at right now)

yes, getting this BP item out in the open will help him. I hope he at least has a basic understanding of it.
