I was on Depakote for a while, it's a great mood stabilizer, works great to control migraines, and does help you sleep. BUT...... I lost a lot of hair while taking it. and being a very vain 36 year old woman, I did not like losing my hair, so we switched to Topamax. Topamax will also help with sleep, but it has also been dubbed as the "stupid" drug. I only take 50 mg, but in higher doses, it can cause short term memory loss. IE: you forget where you put your car keys, you forget the names of people that you've known forever. I also found that on higher doses of Topamax, my taste sensations were really off and everything tasted like crap, especially carbonated beverages. All I could really taste was hot and spicy foods and salty foods. Really great for someone who is post-stroke with colitis. So the lower dose is best. Talk to your Doc I have been on a trial and error basis with my meds for almost 2 years now, and we are still playing with them. Kim
