Hypersomnia?

I have been sleeping for 12-13 hours a night. When I wake up earlier on my own, I am exhausted and then turn around and go right back to sleep.

I went to a sleep clinic and was told it was hypersomnia. Which can be a symptom of depression or bipolar. I don't really go into major depression and was still sleeping this way when I was on an anti-depressant.

Does anyone else have this problem? I have read that exercising, eating healthy and some drugs can help. Do you know if it can be fixed without drugs?

I also think it contributes to my poor memory and lack of concentration.

Question Re: Hypersomnia?

I have been trying to find out about all this too. My 17 yr. old is sleeping all the time. When she does get up and do something, she is back asleep within 25 minutes. She says she can't help it. She is taking Prozac, Abilify, and Vistaril. She is gaining weight, purging, and just started to wet the bed again. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

Re: Hypersomnia?

I am off my AD right now but I had been crazy exhausted - seriously - I could fall asleep sometimes sitting up with my children running around me - even with a 1 1/2 year old I was worried about being unsupervised .... now that I look back I can't believe I made it through that!!! No wonder my weight just kept going up and up and up.

All I know is that I am waiting for an apt w/ a psychologist and going on medication that exhausts me like that is no longer an option for me. Perhaps you can juggle the cocktail and come out a winner.

Best of luck to you - and that poor daughter of yours. Don't settle for less than acceptable..you know what I mean??? Keep at the bit until the answer is found for her. I will pray for you.

Jen

I haven't been excercising lately cause i have been lazy and i really don't fell like doing anything..... I don't even feel like driving 30 min to get my meds either which i should get today......

Re: Hypersomnia?

Well, we finally figured out what her problem was. She was taking two Vistaril 50 mg per day. The doctor took her down to one a day and that works fine. He also increased her Abilify from 5 mg. a day to 15 mg. She is doing much better and able to stay awake a school with no problems. She is still wetting the bed though. When he took her off the Vistaril for a week, she completely quit wetting the bed, so now we are going to see if we can find something that will work like the Vistaril, without the bed wetting. Thanks for your help.

Re: Hypersomnia?

Well, the doctor took her off the Vistaril completely, and increased the Abilify to 20mg. a day. Now she is doing better and not wetting the bed. Hope this helps someone else who may experience the same thing.
Thanks for your help.
