Bipolar or ? - other possible causes for symptoms...

Hey All,

I am going to see a psychiatrist on Wednesday - I have had a diagnosis of bipolar 2 from a psychologist. Having really been thinking about it for the last month - I really do think she was right on the money.

My question though is what kind of tests should I be asking for to eliminate any other possible causes for my symptoms. I am going to ask for a hypoglycemic/diabetes test....but what else should I be looking at before starting medication for bipolar?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Jen

I took a "Y-Boks" test to see if I was OCD before getting my initial diagnosis. I also had a personality profile and MMat? done.

If you've been working with a psychologist for a long time, she probably has a good idea of any mental disorders that may be going on -- what you want to do is rule out any physical problems that may mimic them.

Make sure you tell the psychiatrist the same thing you told us. Depending on your history and a neurological (physical) exam, they may order a variety of bloodwork, MRI, EEG, sleep study, or something else. It is however doubtful they will order all of it.

Wow hummingbirdkiss - that is really interesting to me - how do they mimic each other????

When I was a child I would cry and hold my breath and then faint and have a seizure - my mother did it ... my son does it. Because it is the holding the breath that initiates the seizure it isn't considered epilepsy I have been told - but I am interested in the possible connections...

Thank you so much for your post... and to all the others too....I appreciate having the information - I feel so lost sometimes.....
