| BP tendancies and alcoholic parents
Hey guys.
I read this, i think it was in the book "Im ok, You're ok"-
which by the way, is an amazing behavioural therapy book. even for those of you in doubt of therapy, this one is actually easy to apply and make a change in your thinking patterns-
i read that people with alcoholic parents or parents who drink a lot (maybe not alcoholic but you know..) have a high risk of developing BP- because they say when youre little, a baby and a child growing up your parents behaviours influence you and your thinking patterns, and you take your parents behaviours as normal for adults. so if your parents drink, they typically have an up and down way of acting- like, when youre drinking you become more uppy, and have higher self esteem, etc. you act more outwardly, and are easily irritable. as opposed to when youre not drinking, for an alcoholic, youre less animated, tend to get depressed, etc. So its an up and down pattern and as a child you pick that up.
My family as far as i know doesnt have anyone whos BP, although i know quite a few members of my fam have depression, but then again these days who doesnt. but my dad drinks lots, my mom does to a lesser degree, and my dads dad was a full blown alcoholic. i know lots of people on my dads side are drinkers. not only that but my dad has all the characterists of BP, but he hasnt been to the doctor in years. but as i said it could be how he drinks a lot.
this makes sense to me.....anyone else heard this? i found it to be quite interesting.
