Lithium=fatigue, other medication???

I am taking lithium for bipolar disorder right now, but it makes me extremely fatigued and tired during the day. Does anyone have another medication to recommend for me that works for bipolar disorder. Thanks,

I really like Lamictal (I do 200mg/day), Lithium did not sit well with me. I was tired ALL the time and in a fog.

How much lithium are you taking and how long have you been taking it?

I've been on lithium for 20 years,work, maintain a marriage & keep the house up (ok, but never spotless!). It has been a godsend for me and I wondered if maybe your dosage was too high or you had just started taking it?

Re: Lithium=fatigue, other medication???

Just echoing the other posts, could be too high a dose - it nearly killed me the first two weeks, after that I felt wonderful. All meds have side effects, which is a nightmare - if you've been on it for a while and your doc is sure the doseage is right then you need to think about something else. I'm afraid I never used another stabiliser so I don't have a recommendation - could do a google search on mood stabilisers for other info?

Re: Lithium=fatigue, other medication???

I have been on lithium for about 9 months. For a while I was taking 900 mg a day, and boy I can only began to tell how tired i was becoming. My entire upper body just seemed to shutdown. I am now taking 300 mg, and doing much better. But I am wondering if I could be doing even better on another medication. I have been fatigued somewhat all my life though, so i don't know what to attribute to the lithium and what to attribute to other things. I think, though, that I will stay on the 300 for now and see if my bipolarness can be managed with this dose. Thankyou all for your input!

I would say Topamax. It doesn't have the sedating side effects like Lithium.. and Lithium will also make you heavier... Topamax won't do that.

Handcuffed, just to let you know that when I got married I had been on Lithium for 5 years and was 5'2" and 102 lbs.
At 51 I'm still 5'2" and 125 lbs - not bad for 20 years on Lithium... I blame middle age more than my med!!
The weight thing may not be true for everyone!
