Lithium, capsule form, can I cut it?

Hi,
I am taking lithium that comes in a capsule form. The dosage given to me makes me too tired so I was wondering if I could cut it in half to try a lower dose? Does anyone know if this is safe?

Safe? not sure. but difficult to do w/out the powder going everywhere. Ask your dx for the hard pill in the future or ask the pharmasist to give you the double amount, which would be half the mg. you know, if you are taking 500mg/30days, you ask for 250mg/for 60days.

Hi-
Try the tablet, which I believe, is extended release. I take the tablet, but when I was in the hospital they gave me the capsule--I was sooo tired and out of it. good luck.

Tonya your doctor needs to be in the loop on your meds.
How long have you been on lithium? Some of the side effects become less after a month or two.
Dividing a capsule would be very inexact. And part of what makes lithium so effective is a steady amount in the bloodstream.
Before doing anything with your pills, I'd suggest calling your doctor's nurse and see about having a lithium level done to make sure that you're not at a toxic level.
They could then switch you to a tablet (although I'm not sure that every pharmacy or mail order place keeps both types on hand).

Hello,

Please consult your doctor or pharmacist before you consider opening the capsule. Capsules are designed NOT to be opened and have a different action on the body than a tablet or elixer or any other drug form. The person who responded in regards to blood levels is absolutely correct...you must have blood levels done on a consistent basis in accordance to your doctors' wishes. Also, watch your sodium levels and water levels- but speak to your physician about this.
