I'm 18 and have been treated for bi-polar disorder for about two years; I'm on Lamictal, and also Stratera which was originally for my attention deficit disorder, but which I find also helps with controling my moods. My father also has bi-polar disorder, and he's on Lithium.
I've always had very sensitive skin; I get itches and rashes easily, which prompted my mother to start using a very gentle detergent on my clothes. I still get rashes on my hands and face for no apparent reason, and I'm hyper-aware of anything that's touching my skin. This has never been diagnosed or treated, and it doesn't affect my life much. (And it isn't at all related to Lamictal. It was going on long before I started that.)
The reason I'm bringing this up is that my father also seems to have it, though he's never complained before. I only found out when my mother recounted a story about once when it really bothered him to have a bug-bite ointment on his skin, so much that he tried to remove it with a shaving razor. The ointment was more bothersome to him than the bites, or the bleeding wounds from the razor. It sounded creepily similar to feelings I've had, and I understood his strange reaction completely.
That, and the fact that my skin sensitivity is almost completely irradicated by my medications, leads me to wonder if it's an undocumented symptom of bi-polar disorder. Otherwise, it could just be a genetic quirk that happens to be affected by my medications.
Does anyone else here have similar experiences? Are my speculations at all possible?
