Angry BIPOLAR - Family Frustration

I am extremely frustrated at the moment, my sister stopped taking her medication last November and since Jan has refused to take anything becoming steadily worse by the day.

What i don't understand is how she can be a complete manic or depressed state yet when the police arrive to check on her safety or she has an appointment with her CPN that she can mange to hold it together so that they think she is fine.

I feel like she is being deliberately evil to family members since it has got extremely out of order. How can they control it like that when they need to is she putting it on?

Re: BIPOLAR - Family Frustration

Krishka;

Its a bit like being drunk and being able to sober up for a couple of minutes, at least apparently. You can give the appearance of being stone sober, but you're still dead drunk. The sad thing is that when someone is BiPolar they aren't thinking clearly, and that means that they could decide to stop taking their meds, that is unfortunately a common problem.

What's important to understand is that BiPolar disorder isn't a puton, it's a real illness which affects the persons judgement, and reasoning abilities. Patience patience patience. Meantime i would strongly suggest seeking a support group which could help you deal with some of these issues, and help you find ways of reaching her.

Here's a couple of links which may help you;

Re: BIPOLAR - Family Frustration

Hi,
I totally understand where your coming from, My Mother-In law is manic, she has been off her meds for five years and is basically living like a bag lady. We notified the county mental health facility, they do have her name as a high alert, that is when if for some reason she would get picked up by the police it would show on the computer. My husband had a very rough childhood and your right, when ever she had a court appearance or was confronted by a doctor, she would act totally normal. They know how to play the game. I know allot of people who have this condition like the high energy they get, now my Mother-in law doesnt sleep at night, she will do everything but sleep. I don't understand why they make the choice to go off there meds, they life would be so much better when there are on them. My Mother in law even served time in the mental jail because she decided to try and kidnap a child, she threatened to kill my Family about 6 years ago. My husband has washed his hands clean of her, he is so done which all the drama, he has had to deal with this for about 40 years now and he said no more.
Karen

Re: BIPOLAR - Family Frustration

hi,
thank you for all your responses cause this helped shed a light on me about my ex behavior too.. is it true that if they continue to be untreated with their bipolar and stay off medicine for a couple years they can get dangerous and do irrrational things not thinking clearly right? my ex has been off his meds for a couple yrs then about 3 yrs ago he wasnt thinking and we had an incident here.. he thought the meds were hurting him and that is why he decided to go completly off of them and said he wasnt going to be sucidal anymore he thought he was cured..
