Worried about going on vacation.....

Hi All!
I was wondering if anyone else worries about going on vacation and having an episode while there?

Maybe it's because my Dr's been having to switch meds so frequently because we're having a hard time getting me stabilized, but I'm kinda stressing about being so far from home at the moment.

Of course Hubby doesn't understand and I know it might seem ridiculous to some, but it's real to me.

Any advice?

Yes, manic. Here at home, I channel it the best I can into housework or yardwork. I once cleaned the carpets at 4:00 a.m. lol I'm just not sure what I'll do if it happens while being couped up driving there or even once we get there. I just don't want to ruin this vacation for my family more than anything.

Re: Worried about going on vacation.....

In my dreams everyone has a spouse who understands Bipolar Disorder, has skin so thick that arrows bounce off of it, & never ever says "Snap Out of It".

Ideally you could delay this vacation awhile until you are stabilized. And it would help if your doctor was in your corner on this one so he could talk to your husband about it also.

But it sounds like you're in a corner and you're truly stuck with going??
If so, keep to some sort of regular schedule if you can. Keep the caffeine to a minimum, sleep roughly 8 hours, drink plenty of fluids and take breaks when ever you can. Warn your husband ahead of time what the signs of mania for you are.
Find your stress-free moments where ever you can, but if you do have a break-through mania then this is where YOUR knowledge of your own disorder will come in.
You can't help it.
You can't control it.
It is the chemical imbalance in your brain and all you can do is make do until the vacation is over and you can get back to work on finding your stability.
And, have a good time, ok???

Re: Worried about going on vacation.....

Thank you, Ruth6:11. You have a very caring way about you.

We didn't go on vacation because I took the whole bottle of Restoril the night before and spent the week in the hospital mental health ward. Thank goodness my Mom stepped in and took the kids on a little vacation. I feel so horrible for letting them down like that.

I tried to tell my husband that I was having a hard time. He just didn't get it. I've only been diagnosed for a few months and since I have thyroid cancer, they're having a hard time stabilizing me because I can't have lithium and the other ones don't seem to be helping. I'm still in a mixed state, but trying my best to make it thru each day.
