Coffeegirl2

I just saw you were back and wanted to offer a suggestion. I've recently discovered food allergies can have a major impact on not only our physical
health but our moods and behaviors as well. I know you have difficulties with your sons. I remember now reading how significate food allergies can affect childrens behaviors. If you havent considered it, it's something to think about. Glad to see you back on board. Take Care, K

Re: Coffeegirl2

Hi Kiehn

Thank you for your kind words.

I have read about diet and how it can effect children with ADHD. There is a book about diet and children with ADHD, of which we have read. We tried it, and unfortunately, our son began to lose weight. The sad thing is, he is currently at the lowest end of his weight bracket and cannot afford to lose much more weight and his meds already cause him to lose his appetite a lot already so we are fighting an endless battle.

The good thing is; however, he does like healthy foods- so that is a bonus! And most of the foods that were mentioned on the diet he liked- except the floured foods of which he also likes to eat as well. I think that is the main food concept that is what the diet suggest to avoid; floured food items. If he ever gets to a better weight, we will probably try to implement the diet back into his program again to see if it helps any.

I am for anything to reduce his meds. Right now, he is in a zombie like state after taking them, and it really upsets me. I totally understand what he feels like because after I take the Topamax I too, am a zombie. That is why I take it at night.

His pdoc wants us right now to make him eat anything possible so he doesn't lose anymore weight becasue if he does he will be in minus digits below his weight bracket for his age, and then we will be needing supplement food, of which we have tried- and he won't take, Ensure, etc.

I just got a call from the principals office. My son with ADHD got into trouble today. He has been so good at school up til today. So, I will praise him for that and try to not focus on the naughty behavior. It is just frustrating. Day 5, and already principals office! LOL

Hope all is going well for you, Kiehn.

Thinking of you

Take care

Coffeegirl

Re: Coffeegirl2

Hi, Kiehn I was also gald to see Coffeegirl back in action as I am to see you as well. I hope all is going well in your camp, I know that you have been going through a hard time as well and wanted to send you some ((((HUGS)))).

Coffeegirl, Erin had a most difficult time with her weight as an infant/toddler due to Chronic GERD and we added MCT oil to her foods as well as Karo syrup to add some extra calories. She also was on Pediasure which is a little better tasting than the Ensure and geared towards proper nutrition for kids. You may wish to look into that.

I know that it isn't easy keeping the weight on because as fast as Erin put it on she took it right off with all her fidgeting and running around. And so it was a big chore to make sure that she got the foods and calories in but I was a firm believer in not forcing her to eat lke some of these dieticians wanted me too because I didn't want her to attribute eating to anything unpleasant.

Today she eats like crazy and still runs around and is at a healthy weight.....although now that she is on the Risperdal we are dealing with the weight that comes with being on some of these meds. Thank God she was still on the thin side to begin with....now we are watching calories instead of looking for them....who would have known how life would change!!

Anyway.....I think that you are handling things fine....the readustment to school is big for moms and the kids so I would give your son a little break for the readjustment. And tell him that you KNOW that he is going to do better.....I am sure that the praise will go a long way!!

Re: Coffeegirl2

Hi Goody

Thank you for your encouragement and thoughtfulness.

Erin has certainly been through a lot as a youngster. We will have to try Pediasure. That might work. It comes in a few flavors I think.

Our son also took Risperderal. He didn't gain any weight, infact, he lost a little weight while taking it. So, Erins metabolism might kick into gear the other way because some meds effect people in all various directions.

We did praise our son a lot on his good week, and just talked to him and explained to him that his actions weren't suitable for his behavior and the situation. Then we had to take away some priveledges from him for 2 days. That helped sink in that he had been 'naughty' and needed to regroup himself a little.

Today I again focused on his good parts. We talked about how he has been a good boy, at school and home. I have to get my gears situated for afterschool tomorrow becasue I don't have the stuff ready for lesson plans and the boys are wanting to do school work after school, and I'm kinda running around with my head cut off this week.

Take care and many hugs

Coffeegirl

Re: Coffeegirl2

Coffeegirl ~ You are a wonderful mom!! You handled things so perfectly and your little boy is certainly blessed to have you.

The Pediasure is much better chilled.....putting it in a special glass with a neon straw may make it more appealing. I hope that he likes it and that it at least gives you peace of mind that he is getting his daily nutritional needs met.

Thanks for reassurimg me about the Risperdal. Erin is home now for her last long weekend (until Tuesday) and goes back to pHosp until Wednesday afternoon. There was some miscommunication regarding her being discharged officially today and thank God I followed my instincts and didn't tell Erin!! She is not one to take disappointment well.

So we are almost there.....I can't wait to have her home again and all of us settling in at home. There is alot to do to get prepared for school as well as getting our older daughter packed and up to college next weekend!! Alot on our plate but we're having a feast!!!

Hope you have a great weekend with your family!!!
