I am sure this question has been asked before, but I really want to get all the information you might have.
My ex has been in an episode for almost four month now. We talk on and off (he is with someone else now), but hadn't talked much lately because I was not doing too well with that new woman. But I told him to call me when he needs me. He called me Friday after four weeks of not hearing from him to let me know that he crashed a few days earlier. He had felt the depression coming on and then one day was severely suicidal with a gun in the house...The next day he was manic high again. When we talked he sounded ok, but there was a lot of talk about how he now knows why and he can handle it now - a sign (among others) that he is still far from stable...He did admit to being bipolar, but thinks he can handle it. He can't. And I am not sure for how long he will admit to it because he has done that before and then was not bipolar anymore (when manic).
Ok, today we IMed and I asked him: "If I found a pdoc you could go to for free, would you go?" He gave me his word that he would. I asked if he would allow me to talk to the pdoc as well and he said of course. I would pay for it, but I can't, so I need information about free or cheap mental health care. I know that it's looking bleak, but perhaps someone has an idea. His state has been so unpredictable and after that day, I fear for his safety. One problem is that he does not want to go on medication, but I at least want to get him to a psychiatrist and get input from a professional. He trusts my judgment, but perhaps the pdoc can take this a step further. It's high time.
Any information/experience/reply would be most appreciated!
PS: Today, after a lot of talk and reassurance, he agreed to tell his parents. I told him that if he doesn't, I will. I understand his reluctance (they have been far from supportive), but I want them to lock the bloody gun away and keep an eye on him. What a mess...
