| Re: Books, etc.
I am not bipolar but my 25-year old son is bipolar I. He was diagnosed when he was about 20 and I have been reading ever since in an attempt to understand what he goes through. One book I like very much is "Surviving Manic Depression" by E. Fuller Torrey and Michael B. Knable. It is a good, basic manual for patients, families and loved ones that touches on just about every topic relating to the disorder...causes, symptoms, risk factors; treatments and a good description of various meds; info on drug and alcohol abuse, violence, suicide, etc. There is also a guide to other books, videos, websites, etc. On a different note is a book called "The Bipolar Advantage" by Tom Wooton. Unlike most books, this one is not written by a doctor, but by a guy who is bipolar and offers an interesting perspective. Also anything by Kay Redfield Jamison. When I was trying to understand bipolar in my son, he handed me a copy of "The Unquiet Mind," said read this and then you'll know how I feel.
