Depakote - hot & thirsty?! - Bipolar Disorder Message Board

I just starting taking Depakote ER 250mg.

I notice within an hour or two of taking Depakote ER I get hot & really thirsty. It's kind of hard, because I take it at night and I can't drink a lot of water becuase then I am up all night peeing!

Why does it make me hot and thirsty? Will this go away? Is this bad?

depakote cr does tend to make you very hot and thirsty. i've been taking it for roughly six months now and have noticed a big difference in my thirst. i also take it at night but it doesn't bother me if i get up during the night to use the bathroom although i don't have to work, so therefore it really doesn't make a difference. i have told my pdoc that i don't know if i'll be able to handle it through the summer. i really can't stand the heat.

Hi Sheila,

Are you drinking lots of water during the day? You might want to increase your water intake throughout the day to see if that helps any....

Hi there,

I've never noticed...I take 2000mg but have done so for about 9 yrs. I do know it increases appetite. You should ask your doc.
