what do I do when someone uses their illness to hurt others - Bipolar Disorder Message Board

I have a friend that is supose to take medication for bipolar disorder but instead they wont take any of their psychiatric medication.They would rather use their illness as an excuse to degrade others or mentally abuse others.This person only do this to those that love them. When it comes to other people(outside of those that care),that person act as though there's nothing wrong with them.My friend also act like they know eveything and that their right all the time,also that everone has to do what that person say do. See , I take my medications because I want to get well but my friend refuses to take theirs and tries to convence me not to take mine(even though they don't know what I take medication for). What can that person's family and friends do? That person causes living hell for their own family.

I am Mslainie. It took me many and I am still every minute learning and keeping in mind issues when someone has an illness. Bipolar I had no clue until my son was diagnosed 3years ago but his Dad my ex of almost 10 years was diagnosed 30 years ago and in to this day in denial. I thought my ex was the did things to me and abused me on purpose. I let when he was self med with a drug PCP. BAD combo for a bipolar. I didnt know he was ill, I just thought he was crazy and hated me and that was his intentions when I was in hell with him. But now I have learned thought classes, research, therapist, councilors and psy docs, the hell is part of the illness, not taking meds is part of the illness, hurting everyone they love is part of the illness. My ex to this day is still in denial and that is another symtom of Bipolar. I didnt know all this untill I went thru it with my son and my sons symtoms started coming out at 13, so I a single Mom 60hours 2 job didnt see it right away and he was in counciling since 7 to handle no Dad around didnt pick it up right away. But anyway, its been a long 3 or over years, with medcombos ect....I believe that being Bipolar, puts that person in their own hell. MY son is now 16 1/2 in my the State PA we live in, I ever know he a minor cant make him take his meds after age 14. I thank God he is young, so as he becomes a man he will understand he has to take meds and see his therapist and psy docs.
If your friend is doing wrong, they need to be 302'd ( involuntary psy evaluation) maybe your friend dont feel right on the meds. It took many different combo's and meds to get my sons right for now. As a person changes especially females, their medicines need to be adjusted. If your friend is not in self or other danger, than maybe lightly sugest as their friend to see their psy doc for a medicine adjustment. My son has in the past refused his meds but it took me and psy 2 weeks in psy hospital to figure out he was having problems with medcombo.

Grapefruit :
Good for you for taking your meds. You are incontrol of your life. You have taken full "Responsibilty" for all your own Actions. It is not the responsibility of family and friends to change the denial of your friend. Until he stops the denial, he will never take full responsibility for his actions,and his Bipolar Disorder.

By living with a BPer in denial and hurting you and family and friends, I would suggest you consider leaving him. Let him find other people to deal with his BP disorder. Responsiblity for His Actions should be the "name of the game" with His BP Disorder.

He may just find out that he is "causing living hell" for himself.
