Talking Hello my fellow Bi Polars

I have had the illness for many years . I spent most of those years in denial and misery. About a month ago I finally realized I had to do something . I got honest and came out to my doctor.: In the month since then I have had my back go on me ,been evicted and had my grown children just not give me a break. I understand the illness , but how do I get them to give me a break

Re: Hello my fellow Bi Polars

Hi welcome to the boards. Congratulations for coming out and realizing that you need some help in managing your BP. That is such a BIG step and you should be really proud of yourself.

I am not a BPer but have two daughters, a 16 year old with BP and an 19 year old with Mood Disorder NOS.

As far as te back goes, oh do I know about that...I have had a back disability (Degenerative Disc Disease & Osteoarthritis) for over 20 years. It isn't easy and the pain is at times unbearable. I would imagine that the meds in combination with BP meds is enough to discourage you but hang in there. Things will get better....how quickly they do is pretty much up to you.

I have found that alternating ice and heat works best for me. Get up and walk if you are able to for short periods of time....take your meds when you need to and a week after you feel better to cover things well.

As far as the kids and everything else....you really have no control over other people and what they do but you DO have control over what you do and how you react. Try to pretend that you have a suit of armor on and try to allow as much of this to bounce off of you. If you need to physically remove yourself from a situation by going into another room if need be.

The Serenity Prayer is good and reminds us by saying....

'
"God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference. "

Get a good night's sleep, eat right eliminating caffeine & sugar from your diet, take your meds as prescribed, avoid stress as much as possible, get plenty of exercise and hold onto your sense of humor.

You have a great attitude and the hardest part is over!!! Look forward and know that things will get better now that you have decided to get the help that you need.
