Is it ok for a Bi-polar person to take melatonin?

Hello i am interested in trying a melatonin supplement to help me sleep longer and better and get to sleep faster the only problem is that ive been diagnosed with bipolar , and have done some research and found multiple articles claiming melitonin is benificial for people with Bi-polar and schizophrenia , but i also have came across some warnings against depressed people and taking melatonin and to consult a a doctor before use . I was wondering about the final verdict on melatonin can it be taken by people with mental conditions? when i was in the hospital i was given Ambien to help me sleep . Has anyone here tried melatonin ? Thank you for any help

Re: Is it ok for a Bi-polar person to take melatonin?

I have heard of some people with bipolar taking melatonin and having success. I guess I have not heard the other side of the story. I would definitely check it out with your pdoc or pharmacist though just to be sure it is safe to take with your other medications.

I would check with your pdoc or pharmacist, valerian is another non prescription med for sleep. Just curious, why don't you just use the ambien if it worked?

Cool Re: Is it ok for a Bi-polar person to take melatonin?

ok thanks, Ive heard that
melitonin plays a role in the regulation of the circadian rhythm .and in bipolar people that rythm is out of wack, that is why some days we sleep too much and others dont sleep at all ,im going to give it a try ill let you guys know if it helps

Valerian wouldn't calm my golden retriever down for the groomer. I doubt it'd help you sleep. Get some Ambien!!

Re: Is it ok for a Bi-polar person to take melatonin?

okay, that makes sense. I suffer from severe insomnia and I take Ambien CR, Sonata, and Seroquel 400 mg., and with all these still only get about 4 hrs. sleep a night. But yes they are all closely monitered by my pdoc and all Rx.

Bru, you may want to try and find a free clinic in your area if you have no insurance. They will help you get on meds and maybe therapy too. They can oftentimes give you samples of a med. Look in your phone book for state free clinics or contact NAMI for more help.

Re: Is it ok for a Bi-polar person to take melatonin?

Bru,

Be very very careful with the Lamictal if your using it without the care of a doctor...it can be a very dangerous drug with life threatening side effects. I'm not trying to scare you into not using it...but it is one of "those" meds that should only be used under a doctors care. The way you take, the amounts, the titration timeline....it's all very important with lamictal to avoid the very dangerous side effects.
