Does anyone out there suffer from bipolar and also have children with it? - Bipolar Disorder Message Board

I am 32 years old. My mom committed suicide due to this disorder and i also have a 14 year old son and a 10 year old daughter with it. i would really like to talk to someone that might be going through some of the same things i am.

I have Bipolar 1, my oldest daughter who is an adult was diagnosed a few years ago. then my grandaughter who is 15 yrs of age has it also..

bipolar is genetically passed through generations..

this relates to something i posted earlier. i have chosen not to have children because of how it runs in my family. my cousin has a severe case, my mom has depression, and my sister and i have bp.

i'm scared to death of having a kid with it, for both my sake and the child's sake. i know how hard it can be to find the right medications and stuff, even though my journey has been relatively easy, and i can't fathom passing this on to my child.

at the same time, though, i am really sad about not having kids. :-(

I am bi-polar and my sons and my daughter have it also....Talk about a mad house LOL LOL it was pretty bad when they were all living at home...

This is a truly heart breaking topic for me. I was diagnosed after having my children. I believe my daughter to have a 'mild case'and she is fully functional, but my son breaks my heart. He self medicates with drugs and ETOH, he is violent, hateful, exptremely paranoid. There doesn't seem to be a single good thing about him right now. He was a quiet, sweet child until about 14. He threatened to commit suicide out of what I thought to be the 'blue'. I placed him in a hospital for safety for the 96 hour hold. At the end of the 96 hour hold, he refused to go home with me wanting to live with his dad.

He went to live with his dad, got into drugs, ETOH, had no supervision. I have no idea what came first, with the behaviors, But I have not had my son since that time. He is very angry with everyone, eats little, is emaciated, is mean to everyone. Due to his abusive behaviors, I have told him not to contact me again.

He denies having any problems with drugs, ETOH, Bipolar, etc. His life's behaviors are meant to manipulate everyone in his limited world to do and get what he wants. I honestly don't know how to help him, or if I have to wait until he wants the help?
Be very careful in considering to bring a child into the world if you have Bipolar. Not everything turns out well, nut everyone accepts help.
