What do you do when you start to hate the meds?

I know I need them I just do not want them. It has gotten to the point where when DH reminds me to take them and I do not he escorts me to the kitchen and watches me take them. I just feel so much better and am begining to think I can do fine without all of the medicine. I talked to my therapist about it and he scolded me. I am going to ask my psych about it and see if I can take less, reduce the amount of meds and the number of pills. I am on Lamictal, Abilify, Ativan, and Lithium. I was not right until I started the Lithium and at the least I would like to give it a shot with just the Lithium and Ativan.

Has anyone else been through this? What did you do? If you talked to your psych about it were you able to get them to reduce anything?

It is definatly worth a shot to talk to your pshyc about a change in meds. I have had meds changed, switched, reduced, increased, stopped....ect duing the years. But what ever you do DON'T STOP TAKING THEM WITHOUT YOUR DOC'S OK. That is just asking for trouble and an increase in meds. Just take them and talk to your Doc about it. Having a doc that will work with you on adjustments is a wonderful thing. Then you can freely say how you feel about them and he can tell you honestly what he things you need and don't need. Like everything with Bipolar it is a juggeling act. Keep on keeping on.

Okay, so in your post you said, "I feel so much better" but you're on your meds and didn't say anything about having any problems with the meds other than you just don't like taking so many....so have you considered the fact that you feel so much better because of the meds you're taking? Just a thought.

Re: What do you do when you start to hate the meds?

Hi,

I agree with huffle. From what I've been through and seen in others in my bp group, it's just typical for us to want to change our meds (or just drop them, as some people do), when we're feeling better.

Not the way to go. As huffle said, yes, definitely talk to your pdoc and work with him to try some reductions and see how it goes. But not all at once.
It's not worth it to risk a major crash or mania.

What is it that you hate about the meds?

I think it's actually a good sign that you want to try to reduce the meds. I hope you can, and that you continue to feel better.

Keep us posted, okay?

Seaturtle

Re: What do you do when you start to hate the meds?

I guess I hate the constant reminder that I have something wrong with me, that I cannot just be me. I know I need meds, I just wish I needed less of them, or that they could invent some that you take once a week or something. They make me very sleepy and I am tired of feeling drugged. And they are very expensive. The Lithium and Ativan are both generic and do not cost that much. It just makes me wonder why they try the high priced ones first. I really did start feeling better after I started the Lithium and I think that is what made the difference. I just did not find the Lamictal or Abilify helpful. Even on them I still crashed. I feel like I can do without them. I have a few weeks until my next appointment, but I will be talking to him.

Re: What do you do when you start to hate the meds?

Hello,

I think you're absolutely right. Why add stuff if you had things that were less expensive and worked?

I think doctors are often convinced by salesmen and advertising to give out more and newer drugs. I've read a lot about this. Also, with the advertising of drugs now, patients will go in a demand certain ones, usually the new "wonder drugs."

I tend to want to stick with the older ones, and take the last medication possible.

Go in an insist on trying things your way - at least I would. Your doc should cooperate and see this as good thing, too.

Wish you luck, let us know how it goes, and keep in touch. I couldn't agree with you about not wanting my body and mind medicated any more than is absolutely necessary.

Best to you,

Seaturtle

P.S. As to you wanting to be yourself, well, I've found I need a certain amount of meds to actually "be me." Otherwise, the symptoms of the illness swallow me.
