trouble sleeping

I don't have bipolar at least i haven't been diagnosed with it. Lately I have been able to stay up the whole night without any sleep and I get racing thoughts as well. I get reaaly depressed during the night and just feel like hurting myself. Is there any medication that would be good to help to get rid of these racing thoughts. Is there anything that might actually make me tired. I take 3mg of ativan and 400mg of Seroquel at night and they don't even put me to sleep. This has just been getting very annoying latly and all I would like is to get even an hour of sleep.

Re: trouble sleeping

Are you seeing a psychiatrist and is he/she prescribing your meds? If so, have you asked him for a BiPolar evaluation? that seems like it would be your best next step. If it is BiPolar then he would need to get you on a meds/therapy regimen to get you stable.

Since that's the case, it's very likely you could have schizoaffective disorder, BPI or II with psychotic features or atypical bipolar.

I take 300mg of Trazodone when I'm manic or can't sleep and it works like a charm. It knocks me out within 5 minutes.

Re: trouble sleeping

Man I wish 300 mg would do that for me. I took 300mg at 10:30 last night and didn't go to sleep until 4:30 this morning. We're probably going to have to go up to 400 mg at next pdoc visit.

From what my pdoc told me, 300mg of Trazodone isn't considered a high dose. Neither is 400mg. 500mg and above is considered a high dose. At any rate, I hope the med increase makes a difference. I'm very sensitive when it comes to meds (and weigh 114 pounds), so I can't take extremely high doses. The only exception is Depakote, but since I've been taking that for the past 3 years, my body has become acclimated to it.

Re: trouble sleeping

My hypomania manifests itself primarily in insomnia with racing thoughts during the night. After trying virtually everything in the way of sleeping pills, xanax (prescribed by a doctor who didn't really know what he was doing), and trazadone, seroquel has finally been the answer for me. As a side bonus, it also helps a great deal with chronic migraines and severe anxiety.

What med helps with your migraines and anxiety? I find that I've had a decrease in my migraines overall ever since I started taking Depakote. My GP added Topamax as a migraine preventative, but I don't think the dose (50mg) is high enough, so I'm going to ask her to increase it to 100mg which I've heard is the standard dosage for a migraine preventative.

As far as hypomania is concerned, I'm definitely hypomanic today. I took a shower, brushed my teeth, put on make-up, tied my hair back in a braid and am wearing a dress. While I like to look nice even when I'm feeling level, I put forth extra effort this morning. I even had a passing thought about how much I like my hair despite the fact that I normally hate it due to the curly waves Depakote caused after it used to be straight.

Re: trouble sleeping

Dreams,

Actually 50mg is the standard therapeutic dose of Topamax due to the serious side effects. They only go up to 100 if your body gets used to it, and it's not doing it's job. I've been on it for 2 1/2 years and only got raised to 100 because that happened, 6 months ago.

I saw my GP yesterday for my pain med check up and asked her if we need to up the topamax, does your body get used to it, etc. And she said no, the only reason you would up it is if it stopped working, and going up 25 or 50 mgs. would be it, if it didn't do it's job after that, you'd have to stop taking it altogether.

Re: trouble sleeping

Kat,

I'm not too concerned if Topamax doesn't work for me at 100mg or 150mg because I could always take Verapamil. I used to be on Verapamil many years ago and it worked well for me, but I no longer remember why I stopped taking it.

Re: trouble sleeping

In 2 weeks when I see my pdoc I'm also going to up my Trazadone to 400, so let me know how that works for you. I took 300 with 4 benadryl last night at 11:00 and didn't fall asleep until 4:15ish. I just lay here awake, board as He** unable to fall asleep.

Re: trouble sleeping

I'm sorry to hear that, Kat. I was able to fall asleep around 2:30, but that was after taking 2 Clonazepam and 300mg of Trazodone. I'm a little worried about how I will sleep tonight because I've already taken 2 doses of Clonazepam due to my hypomania and worry that if I take another 2 tonight, it won't have any effect on me.

Re: trouble sleeping

I know, after a while the anxiety just builds up because you worry that the meds just aren't going to work, and then the anxiety makes you not sleep. It's this dang circle that never stops.

Re: trouble sleeping

Well after today's tdoc appointment, I guess I don't have any choice in the matter. It looks like I'll be taking 3 Clonazepams and 300mg of Trazodone since I'm manic (according to my tdoc). We'll see if it helps. I took 2 last night along with the Trazodone, but only slept 4.5 hours. Dangit. I'm so tempted not to take any of my meds. I'm so sick of this.
