Cold Meds and BP

Hi everyone,

I'm coming down with a cold and was wondering if there are any cold meds I can take that won't negatively interfere with my BP meds? I take Depakote, Fluoxetine, Geodon, Trazodone, Clonazepam and Topamax (for migraines although from what my pdoc and tdoc told me, it also helps BP).

Re: Cold Meds and BP

I take it no one has any idea what kind of cold meds I can take? I'll have to call my pharmacy or pdoc for an answer.

Sorry dreams, you might go to webmd, and look up each of them to see what you shouldn't take with each of them... but other than that i have no idea. sorry.

typeing,

I woke up with laryngitis and a sore throat this morning. I'll check out WebMD to find out what they recommend. Thanks.

Re: Cold Meds and BP

What kind of cold meds were you thinking about taking. I know that taking something like tylenol or motrin or benylin or any ones like that are definitly ok to take with the meds your on. Although the best person to ask about this would be your pharmacist though.

Dreams,

Sorry I've been off the boards for, well you know why, my pdoc, GP, and pharmacist have me on Zyrtec for med. caused stuffiness night stuffiness or general daytime "just a cold" stuffiness and I can take Dayquil during the day, for more "flulike" stuff but that's it.

Hope you feel better friend. How' the mixed state going?

kat

To be honest, I really have no idea what I should take. The last time I was sick (December), I had a URI and was put on an antibiotic. Prior to that, I haven't been sick for 2 years. I'm looking for a med to help address my sneezing, congestion and sore throat.

Personally I think that anything that you take over the counter is sake to have when your sick with the meds that you take. But I'm going to say it again see a pharmacist anyways or go on webmd.

Thanks for responding, Kat. I don't have any stuffiness. I'm congested. My nose has been running since last night.

As far as my mixed state is concerned, I'm finally feeling level thanks to my Clonazepam. I'm just hoping that being sick won't make me have another manic episode like it usually does. It seems like whenever I have a manic episode, I get sick and then have another manic episode a few days after getting sick. No pun intended, but it's a vicious cycle.

Re: Cold Meds and BP

Sneezing and if it's nose congetsion = zyrtec w/sorethroat = zyrtec + advil

Sneezing, congestiong(everywhere), sorethroat = Dayquil, (2 capsules or liquid)

this is what my pdoc and gp would have me take, but as you know we can only give an opinion and not prescribe. )

Will do. I think I'll call my pharmacist since I'm leery of relying on information I get on the web. Someone on another BP board recommended a different med interaction website and let's just say the information I read scared me. If the information that website gave me was correct, I shouldn't be taking any of the meds I am.

I'll talk to my pharmacist and ask her about taking Zyrtec/Advil or Dayquil. By the way, can I take Nyquil at night?

Re: Cold Meds and BP

Hopefully this time though since you have your Klonopin, if you keep taking it on your regular schedule that will ward off the manic state after your cold, we'll keep our finger, toes, ears, knees and elbows crossed 'kay?

((((((hugs)))))))))

hmmm........should I even dare say it......

my son and I are both home with a nasty cold today.....*lol* the musketeers strike again!

Re: Cold Meds and BP

i don't ever even think about nyquil nor do my doc's cuz I'm allergic to drinking alcohol...so that ones automatically off the table. But I'd check with your doc, the only diff. if I remember right is the addition of an anti-histamine and alcohol....I think.

Re: Cold Meds and BP

Oh wow, Kat. It's scary how similar our symptoms are. Everytime I'm manic, you're depressed or we're both depressed together. Now we both have a bad cold. I hope you feel better soon! Hugs!

I'm not surprised that I'm sick though given my manic episode and how crazy our weather has been lately. Today temperatures are in the 50s again, but by the end of the week, it will get back down into the 30s.

Re: Cold Meds and BP

Hmmm. I'll have to ask my pharmacist about that. I already take Fexofenadine (Allegra generic) for my allergies which is also an antihistamine, so I wonder if that will lessen the effects of Nyquil?

Re: Cold Meds and BP

yeah that would probably be too much anti-h, I take Singulair so I get my anti-h from that. I also have to watch a bunch of the cold/flu meds because of the Seizure disorder, usually if I stay withing my pdocs range it covers both.

Yeah I was supposed to go hang with my BF and her 1 yr old son whom I havn't seen in ages but been fighting this cold for a day or so, then Nick woke up sick, so took care of my day. Our weather like yours is all over ther place, and it's rainy and nasty also. major yuck!
